ATTRIBUTES OF AN ESSAY

1! Standard English
• Any essay(argument/issue) should conform to the norms of
Standard English(not standardized English).
• Standard English is what is called Kingʼs or Queenʼs English.
Educated people from either side of the Atlantic use this form.

2. Analysis of Premises
• PREMISS(GB)- Logic
Premise(US)- Surrounding Environment.
• Every premiss needs to analyzed.
• Critical reasoning-to detect implied/overtly stated statement.

3. Assumption
• An assumption-that kind of theory which may be relevant (or)
irrelevant.
• You critique(weaken) a critique(argument).
• Any argument follows this formal:

A=CPA

where A-Argument
C-Conclusion
P-Premisses
A-Assumption(Hidden Premiss)

• Never be subjective in essay writing,always be objective.

• Format
5 paragraphs.
(i)1 for Introduction and 1 conclusion.
(ii) 2 FOR the topic and one AGAINST(ISSUE).
(iii)3 for criticizing the premises(ARGUMENT).

• Every paragraph should be linked to the other logically.

• Don't repeat words/ideas used in the previous paragraphs
(It is a blemish in a good essay).

5. Usage of Language:

• It should have syntactical variety.

• This is involves not only syntax, but also the use of words
correct should be pertinent(i.e do not use irrelevant words).

6. Illustrations:
• A good essay should have many examples and suitable
illustrations.
• The illustrations may be related to
life,science,literature,politics,philosophy,religion,history and
sociology.
• NOTE:
(a) In ISSUE you can have illustrations.
(b) In an ARGUMENT, you cannot have illustrations

7. Punctuation:
• Absolutely necessary for everything.
• Be careful in the use of commas,quotation marks,full
stop,question marks,colons and semi-colons
