STORYTELLING TIPS…
1. Create the Right Setting: Atmosphere and audience can make all the difference when telling a story. Consider the size, demographics, and
other unique aspects of the congregation, including their worship style (traditional or contemporary), socio-economic backgrounds, etc.
2. Do Not Be Shy: When you’re telling a story, it’s time to come out of your shell and step out in faith. Speak loudly enough to be easily heard,
modulate your voice, and use creative voices for each character.
3. Watch Your Pacing: Build suspense with the use of pacing and volume. Be careful to not bore your audience or rush through the best parts.
Pause for dramatic effect when appropriate, but skim through parts that drag. Watch your audience for cues on pacing.
4. Engage the Audience: Interact with the audience through asides, private jokes and even invitations to participate. The more you involve the
audience, the more they will enjoy the experience.
5. Know Your Story Well: You don’t have to memorize the story word for word, but you do need to know the story well enough to tell it ef-
fectively without pausing or losing your place. Be visual, for if you cannot see it, nobody else will either; and if they cannot see it, they will not
remember it.
6. Tell the Truth: If you are not telling the truth, listeners will know. The integrity of your ministry (over a lifetime) is more important than the
