What is a Bill of Lading?

● A bill of lading is a document issued by a carrier to

a shipper, acknowledging that specified goods have


been received on board as cargo for conveyance to a
named place for delivery to the consignee who is
usually identified.

A Bill of Lading contains

i. consignor's and consignee's name,

ii. name of the port of loading and un-loading, port of final destination,

iii. name of the vessel and voyage number,

iv. date on which the container has been loaded on the vessel – “Shipped on
board”,

v. description of goods being transported with number of packages and


kind of packaging,

vi. marks and numbers on the packages,

vii. weight and/or volume of the cargo.

Type of bill of lading that serves as a:


i. receipt of goods by an airline (carrier)
ii. as a contract of carriage between the shipper and
the carrier. It includes (a) conditions of carriage that
define (among other terms and conditions) the
carrier's limits of liability and claims procedures, (b)
a description of the goods, and (c) applicable charges.
Unlike a bill of lading, an AWB is a non-negotiable
instrument, does not specify on which flight the
shipment will be sent, or when it will reach its
destination.

 To The Exporter:

• Acts as an acknowledgment from shipping company that


the goods have been received for shipment.
• If any damage occurs to the cargo during transit, he can
hold the shipping company responsible.
• It is a contract of carriage between the exporter (shipper)
& shipping company.

• It is a document of title to the goods.


 To The Shipping Company:

• Helps in collecting the freight amount from the


exporter/importer.
• Protection from wrong claims.
