INTRODUCTION
It is automatic identification method,
relying on storing and remotely
retrieving data using devices called
RFID tags or transponders.
HISTORY
•In 1946 Léon Theremin invented an
espionage tool for the Soviet Union which
retransmitted incident radio waves with audio
information.
•IFF transponder was invented by the British
in 1939.
•Mario Cardullo's U.S. Patent 3,713,148 in
1973 was the first true ancestor of modern
RFID.
•The first patent to be associated with the
abbreviation RFID was granted to Charles
RFID SYSTEM
SYSTEM COMPONENTS
• Tags
• Interrogator
• Middle ware
HOW RFID WORKS

• Active tags actively transmit data to a reader.

• passive tags draw power from the magnetic field
generated between itself and a reader to power
its microchip’s circuits, allowing it to reflect the RF
signal transmitted to them from a reader, adding
information by modulating the reflected signal
• For communication tag and reader must be tuned
to same frequency.
CURRENT USES
 Passport
 Product tracking
 Automotive
 Animal identification
 RFID in inventory systems
 Human implants
 RFID in libraries
POTENTIAL USES
– Replacing barcodes

– Telemetry

– Patient identification
ADVANTAGES
