Adding and Subtracting Rational Expressions

Remember from arithmetic that in order to add (or subtract)

fractions, they must first be written as equivalent fractions with
a common denominator. The least common denominator (LCD)
is usually used. The LCD is the least common multiple (LCM) of
the denominators. We can use the same method to add and
subtract rational expressions as well.

When Denominators Are the Same or Opposites

When adding or subtracting rational expressions with the same

denominator, add or subtract the numerators and keep the same
denominator.

Example 6:

First find the LCM of the denominators: 10x. Then

multiply each expression by a form of 1. For each
expression choose whatever symbol for 1 will give
you the LCM in each denominator.
