The NCST is located on old railroad grade between Gaylord and
Michigan DNR Announces Partial Closure of North Central Mackinaw City, and was improved with a new limestone surface in 2007.
State Trail in Cheboygan County The water rose over the former grade in several locations, but washed
out just two locations. The majority of the compacted limestone trail
surface remained in place after the flood waters went down.

Repairs will be completed by DNR staff, and the trail will be reopened as
soon as possible. In the meantime, the DNR appreciates the public’s
cooperation with respect to the barriers on the closed trail segments.
Trail users are encouraged to use the NCST trail portions not affected by
the rain.

“She has natural talent,” he said. “She doesn’t have any bad
habits. She just doesn’t miss.”

Sorahan didn’t miss much last year when she finished second in the 20-
21 yard individual handicap division at the Cornhusker Trapshoot.

On that night back in the fourth grade, Sorahan won in a drawing a


membership into the Ducks Unlimited Green Wings program for youth
shooters. That’s when Wiese took her under his wing.

Sorahan didn’t care that there were few girls her age shooting. “It’s
something a lot of girls didn’t do at the time, so it was something, like the
boys, I could do,” she said.

“It’s not about winning; it’s about shooting against people
and making them think they have to be better than you.”

Sorahan has a lifetime of trapshooting to look forward to now.

“That’s another reason that I like to shoot trap,” she said.


“You can’t play basketball your whole life, but you can shoot
your whole life.”

Wes Higgins, a U.S. Army veteran and co-founder of VO, said the idea
came from the usual talk he and his soldiers shared about better times
upon their return home.

“We all made promises to get together when we made it


back,” said Higgins. ”Some guys got hurt and a few didn’t
make it, so we just wanted to honor them by continuing the
freedoms we fought for.”

Higgins and Cody Hirt, another co-founder of VO, witnessed the effects
of the outings and began finding more injured veterans to benefit. The

BSA Councils applying for a grant must specifically earmark funds for
shooting sports programs and provide matching funds at least equal to
the grant request. NSSF will provide funding to the first 50 qualifying
applicants up to a maximum of $2,000 in matching support.

Councils must use awarded funds toward the purchase of equipment and
supplies for their shooting sports activities from an NSSF member
retailer, a list of which is available at www.nssf.org/retailers/find.

opening day this spring should note a new opening time of noon.
Antler Hunters Should Note Noon Opening on Wildlife
Management Areas There are three wildlife management areas in west-central Montana that
are antler-hunting destinations with regularly scheduled openings on
May 15: Blackfoot-Clearwater near Seeley Lake, Threemile in the
Bitterroot Valley and Spotted Dog near Garrison.

Some of these WMAs have traditionally opened at midnight on May 15,


but the FWP Commission recently enacted regulations that require all
Montana WMAs with winter closures to reopen at noon to help with
consistency and public safety.

Dave Dziak, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Region 2 WMA manager,
noted that even after these areas open, some roads are likely to remain
closed until muddy road conditions improve.

Some Montana WMAs are open year-round, but many are closed during
the winter months to protect wildlife from disturbance on their winter
range. In addition to these three antler-hunting destinations, several

stages, a slip on stage two’s long-range rifle steel arguably decided the
match, as Upchurch’s lead on stage two mirrored his overall point lead
over Voigt.
