PLANNING, AND IMPLEMENTING ICT INITIATIVES IN EDUCATION

There are a number of issues to be considered in the planning and implementing ICT
initiatives in education:

I. Curriculum goals, and instructional and evaluation methods


II. Continuous Professional development in order to make them more effective in using
computers for teaching and for other purposes
III. Selection of equipment (hardware and software) with specific consideration to new
and emerging technologies
IV. Estimated timelines and proposed schedule
V. Possible establishment of incentive/reward programmes
VI. Procurement: the entire process of researching, comparing various options and actual
purchasing
VII. Availability of community resources that can be tapped
VIII. Legal issues such as software piracy
IX. Infrastructure – networks in particular
X. Maintenance of equipment and facilities
XI. Special needs learners such as the visual, hearing/speech or physical impaired as well
as exceptional students or those with learning disabilities
XII. Security or measures that should be taken to protect the computers, networks,
personnel and software from destruction, misuse and harm
XIII. Funding from various sources: grants, loans, fund raising activities, partner-in-
progress programmes
XIV. Facilities or anything needed to house or power the chosen technology equipment
XV. Obsolescence, environmental issues, equity of access, ergonomics and standards
