The Self Instructional Material (SIM) is divided into four sections, each of 20 units, and
two audio Cassettes as detailed below :

Duration

The course is of one-year duration. However, it may be completed in two years.

Counselling and Support Services

The study material and audio cassettes will be dispatched to the student by post on
confirmation of admission. No counseling classes are required. However, the students may
contact the course coordinator at Directorate of Distance Education, Headquarter
(Hyderabad) through letters or E-mail to clarify their doubts.

Evaluation and Examination

The student will write the Term End Examination of 4 papers, one paper for each section
and each paper will carry 70 marks. Each paper will have two compulsory assignments,
each of 30 marks.

Programme Fee

The programme fee is payable through crossed Demand Draft from any Nationalised
Bank drawn in favour of Maulana Azad National Urdu University and payable at Hyderabad
only.

( 2) Proficiency in Urdu Through English
Objective of the þCourse
As per the mandate of the Act, it is the responsibility of the Urdu University not only to
acquaint the citizens of greater India with Urdu Language but also to devise and design such
courses which will bring multilingual and multicultural people of this great nation into a
composite whole. Proficiency of Urdu through Hindi and English is an attempt of the
University in this direction.

The main objective of these two certificate courses is to acquaint people with Urdu
language. The courses have been so devised that persons who have basic knowledge of
reading and writing English/Hindi language will be able to learn Urdu. These courses will be
of immense help to such Govt. employees for whom the knowledge of Urdu is mandatory.
These courses will also be helpful to those who are closely associated with academic
institutions like libraries, archives, academies and museums. It will open up avenues for low
skilled technicians in film industry, T.V. and Radio etc.

Course Contents

The course is divided in twenty eight (28) units.


1. Block - 1 : It has five units and it teaches the basics of Urdu alphabet. »Its shapes the
pattern of writing and diacritical marks.
2. Block - 2 : It deals with two, three and four letter words, it also introduces for the
readers two, three four words sentences and also small sentences.
These two blocks have been so designed that a beginner will be acquainted with the
basic of Urdu language.
3. Block - 3 : It introduces to the learners the objects of day to day use such as days and
months, fruits and vegetables, seasons and climate and numericals, etc. and such
aspects, which are a part and parcel of day to day life.
4. Block - 4 : It discusses the basics of Urdu grammar such as noun, pronoun, verb,
singular, plural, genders and idioms.
5. Block - 5 : It deals with passages, poems and stories.
The course evolves in a graded manner enabling the learner to acquaint himself/herself
from the basics to stage where he/she will be able to speak, read and write Urdu language.
Duration of Course
The duration of the course is six months. But the students, according to their
convenience, can complete the course within a maximum period of two years.
Admission Criteria
The Candidate should be acquainted with English/Hindi and should complete 18 years of
age as on 31st August 2010. There is no eligibility test for admission.

Objective of the Course

The main objective of the course is to help Urdu speakers to improve their
proficiency of English-both spoken and written. English is becoming increasingly important
for success in all walks of life. Almost all jobs now require the ability to function well
through English. Apart from work, English is needed for education, business, entertainment
and so on. This course covers all aspects of English i.e. pronunciation, grammar,
vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing - so that students can achieve all-round
improvement in English.

Course Contents

This course consists of four sections:


Section - 1 : It contains units 1-10 and deals with English pronunciation, listening and
speaking.
Section - 2 : It contains units 11-20 and focuses on reading skills and expansion of
vocabulary.
Section - 3 : It contains units 21-30 and concentrates on writing and grammar.
Section - 4 : It is the Practice Book. It contains the assignments to be completed by the
students.
An audio cassette is also provided to help the students to improve their English
pronunciation and give them confidence to speak in English.

Maulana Azad National Urdu University & Distance Education
The MAULANA AZAD NATIONAL URDU UNIVERSITY (MANUU) was
established in 1998 by an Act of Parliament as a dual mode Central University. It is situated
in Hyderabad with an All-India Jurisdiction and is empowered to impart education through
traditional and distance modes. The mandate of the University is to promote Urdu language,
provide higher and vocational education through Urdu medium and focus on women's
education. The University has grown in strength from year to year. There was a total student
strenght of about 1,57,000 in 2009. At present, there are about 168 Study Centres. The
University also offers many programmes in regular mode at campus, the details of which can
be had from a separate prospectus or University Website.

Nine Regional Centres are functioning at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Patna,
Darbhanga, Srinagar, Bhopal & Ranchi. Apart from these, there are six Sub-Regional
Centres of MANUU at Jammu, Lucknow, Sambhal, Nuh, Hyderabad & Amravati. One
Examination Centre has been established at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia for NRI students . The
University has been allotted 200 acres in the picturesque locale of Gachibowli, which has
emerged as the IT and educational hub of Hyderabad where the IIT, the Central University
of Hyderabad, the Indian School of Business and software development centres of various
multi-national companies are located.

The University Library is a member of the INFLIBNET Consortium and is a recipient of


the UGC infonet facility, wherein the University is connected through Internet, lease line
providing access to world databases on e-journals and books. The campus has seen vibrant
growth over the last decade by the construction of the buildings of the Directorate of
Distance Education, Lecture Hall Complex, Urdu Cultural Centre, Centre for Professional
Development of Urdu Medium Teachers. IMRC, Staff Quarters, Internal Roads, Canteen

 The Eligibility Test is meant for those candidates who are desirous of applying for the degree
programme of the University but have not completed their 10+2. This is for those who have
studied only up to 10th class, or have not studied at all. Apart from these, all candidates who
hold a certificate from any educational institution, other than those specified in the
prospectus (Madrasas & their equivalency List) will have to appear for the Eligibility Test. If

1. The Term End Examination of all the courses of Distance Mode Education is generally held in the
month of September/October of every year. All the students who did not pass or write the last exam,
may appear in the current exam.
2. The candidates are advised to submit their Exam Application Form, and copy of the identity card to
the concerned Study Centre only till the 31st July of every year.
3. Those who do not possess identity card should obtain I-Card from Regional Director after submission of
one passport size photograph alongwith demand draft/IPO of Rs. 20/-
4. Hall Tickets and time table of examination will be dispatched by post to the eligible candidates to their
addresses, please enclose a self-addressed envelop (7"x4") duly affixing Rs. 5/- postal stamp. Otherwise,
the Hall Ticket will be dispatched to your Study/Exam Centre. You may collect it from the Coordinator
one day before the commencement of Examination.
5. In case of not receiving of Hall Ticket, the students may contact their concerned Coordinator of the
Study Centre one day before for Duplicate Hall Ticket.
6. Everyone should appear for the exams at the Centre allotted by the Regional Director concerned.
7. Submit the Examination Form alongwith, self-addressed envelope (7"x4") duly affixing Rs. 5/- postal
stamp, Xerox copy of your I-Card, completely filled-in Hall Ticket in person or send by Registered Post
to the Study Centre concerned from 15th June to 31st July of every year.
8. Exam schedule may also be obtained from the Study Centre/Regional Centre. Student may also visit
the University website www.manuu.ac.in for Exam schedule.

2. Students should take the examination only in the subjects mentioned in the Hall Ticket.
3. The University reserves the right to cancel the admission of any student to the examination at any
stage if it is detected that his/her admission to the examination is against the rules.
4. Students should take their respective seats in the examination hall at least 5 minutes before the
commencement of the examination. Those coming half-an-hour after the prescribed time shall not be
allowed to write the examination.
5. Students are prohibited from: (i) possessing papers, books, notes or any written material on body or
clothing, (ii) receiving help from other students, (iii) helping other students, (iv) communicating in any
form another student or any person other than the supervisory staff (v) consulting notes, books or any
person in or outside the examination hall, (vi) assaulting, abusing or intimidating any person
connected with the examination work at any time and causing disturbance in the examination hall
during the examination hours, etc.
Non-compliance of the above would result in being debarred from appearing at the subsequent
