b) Identify the labelled parts X and Y.

X: Phloem Y: Xylem

c) State the content(s) that can be found in X and Y.

X: Food Y: Water and dissolved mineral salts

9. a) For each statement, state whether they are true or false.

i) Water is transported from the roots to the leaves by the phloem. False

ii) Xylem tissues can be found in leaves. True

iii) Mineral salts enter the roots by active transport. True

b) For each false statement, correct the mistake to make the sentence true.
i) Water is transported from the roots to the leaves by the xylem.

10. Name the process by which:

a) carbon dioxide in the atmosphere enters the leaves of plants.

Diffusion

b) water from the soil enters the roots of plants.

Osmosis

11. The diagram on the right shows a component of the blood.

a) Identify the component shown.

Red blood cell

b) i) The component in part (a) is found in a fluid. What is this fluid called?
Plasma

ii) There are other substances found in this fluid. Suggest two substances that
can be found in this fluid.
Waste products and digested food

iii) How do the substances stated in part (ii) move from the blood to the body
cells or vice versa?
Through diffusion

12. Describe briefly how water and mineral salts are transported from the ground to the
leaves.
Water is absorbed into the roots through the root hairs by osmosis. Mineral salts are absorbed through the

root hairs by active transport. The water and mineral salts then move up the plants by transpiration pull.

This force pulls the water and mineral salts upwards to the leaves. Water and mineral salts then travel up

the stem to the leaves through the xylem.

13. Why do human beings need an efficient transport system to transport oxygen,
nutrients and waste products around their bodies?
Human beings are multicellular organisms. There must be an efficient transport system to bring oxygen

and nutrients as well as remove waste products from every cell, so that the cells can survive and carry out

the necessary metabolic activities.
