INTRODUCTION
The Global Oceans Non-Governmental Organization Directory was put together by the
Global Forum on Oceans, Coasts, and Islands to provide a cohesive and current source of
information on non-governmental organizations (NGOs) around the world that are
involved in furthering the agenda of the World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD) and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation related to issues of governance,
management, and conservation of oceans, coasts, and small island developing States.
The Global Forum was created at the World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD) in Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2002, with the aim to advance the
interests of oceans-which incorporate 72% of the Earth; coasts-the home of 50% of the
world's population; and islands - 43 (22%) of the world's nations are small island
developing States which are especially dependent on the oceans. NGOs working with
issues of oceans, coasts, and small island developing States have been recognized as
crucial participants and partners in the advancement of the goals set forth at the WSSD.
Future and updated versions of the directory will be regularly posted. Partners of the
Global Forum are not responsible for the content of the directory. Any mistakes or
omissions are the responsibility of the authors of the report. Further, the Global Forum
will reserve the right to exclude organizations if they do not generally match the criteria
stated above. The Global Forum will rely on the NGOs to provide accurate information
and update changes as needed.
3
2. Directory Structure
The Directory is composed of two main sections. The first section lists major
international NGOs that are involved in programs related to oceans, coasts, and small
island developing States on the global scale. For each organization listed, there is a short
description of the mission, goals, and history, followed by the contact information for the
organization's representative offices around the globe.
The second section presents active regional and national NGOs working with issues of
oceans, coasts, and small island developing States in different regions around the globe.
Rather than focusing on global conservation and management of the oceans, these NGOs
are primarily and foremost concerned with the marine-related problems in the region and
nations in which they are based and operate. Some organizations work on sustainable
development in environmental issues, and poverty alleviation in local coastal
communities. After a short description of the aims, objectives, history, and mission of
each organization, there is contact information provided for its regional or national
offices.
A categorical and alphabetical index will be available on the Global Forum website to
enable easy browsing and searching, along with the complete Directory for those wishing
to download the entire document.
3. Target Audience
4. Funding
The Global Oceans NGO Directory has been undertaken and funded within the
framework of GEF/MSP: Fostering a Global Dialogue on Oceans, Coasts, and SIDS,
and on Freshwater-Coastal-Marine Interlinkages, and with additional resources from the
Gerard J. Mangone Center for Marine Policy, University of Delaware, College of Marine
and Earth Studies.

Alliance for Zero Extinction
http://www.zeroextinction.org/index.htm
The Alliance for Zero Extinction is an initiative led by a group of biodiversity conservation organizations
to identify and protect the last remaining habitats for the world’s most endangered species. The Alliance
aims to stem species extinctions, beginning with terrestrial vertebrates whose populations and distributions
are best known, and including other species as soon as sufficient information becomes available to assess
their threat level. By starting with the species that are most endangered, the Alliance aims to create a front
line of defence against extinction that will hold until broader scale conservation efforts can restore
sufficient habitat to enable populations to rebound.

Waterkeepers are full-time, privately-funded, non-governmental advocates for an
identified river, lake, bay, or sound. They are recognized by their community, local

compliance with environmental laws, respond to citizen complaints, identify problems
which affect their identified bodies of water and devise appropriate remedies to
address these problems. Waterkeeper Alliance connects and supports local
Waterkeeper programs to provide a voice for waterways and their communities
worldwide. To champion clean water and strong communities, Waterkeeper Alliance
supports and empowers member Waterkeeper organizations to protect communities,
ecosystems, and water quality; promotes the Waterkeeper model for watershed
