1. (a) For any two events prove that P (A ∪ B) = P (A) + P (B) − P (A ∩ B).
(b) State and prove Baye’s theorem.
2. (a) Out of 24 mangoes 6 are rotten, 2 mangoes are drawn. Obtain the probability distribution
of the number of rotten mangoes that can be drawn.
(b) If X and Y are discrete random variables and K is a constant prove that
i. E ( X+ K)=E (X)+K
ii. E (X+Y)=E (X)+E(Y).
3. (a) A random variable has normal distribution with µ = 62.4. Find its standard deviation if
the probability is 0.20 that it will take on a value greater than 79.2.
(b) Prove that normal distribution is a niting form of binomial distribution.
4. (a) Certain tubes manufactured by a company have a mean life time of 800 hours and a
standard deviation of 60 hours. Find the probability that a random sample of 16 tubes
taken from the group will have a mean life time between 790 and 810 hours.
(b) Out of 1000 samples of 200 children each, in how many would you expect to find that 53%
or more are girls.
5. (a) Explain:
i. Point estimation
ii. Interval estimation and
iii. Bayerian estimation.
(b) Show that sample mean X is an unbiased estimator of the population mean µ.
6. (a) A random sample of 400 items is found to have a mean of 82 and S.D of 18. Find 95%
confidence interval for the mean .
(b) A coin is tressed 960 times. Head turned up 183 times. Find whether the coin is unbiased.
7. Two independent samples of sound 7 items respectively had the following values.

Sample I 11 11 13 11 15 9 12 14
Sample II 9 11 10 13 9 8 10 -
Is the difference between the means of samples significant.
8. A department store has a single cashier. During the rush hours, customers arrive at a rate of
20 customers per hour. The average number of customers that can be processed by the cashier
is 24 per hour. Assume that the conditions for use of the single-channel queing model apply.
(a) What is the probability that the cashier is idle ?
(b) What is the average number of customers in the queing system ?
