Ferroresonant Transformer Measurements

Concept by Hector D. Perez-Torres Lab Measurements by Carbonprobe 3/9/08 The aim here is to measure the input energy as compared to the output energy in an unloaded ferroresonant transformer.

The transformer is made by Lenco Electronics, Inc. part # CVS-100-120-60 and was purchased for $322. It comes with a 4F 660 VAC capacitor for the resonant coil.

Using an LCR meter the inductance of the coils are: Primary Coil 500 mH Secondary Coil 142 mH Capacitor Coil 2.57 H

The input coil was connected to 120VAC 60Hz, the secondary coil was left unloaded and output measurements were taken at the capacitor.

From the trace above, the input current and voltage are out of phase by: (5.4ms*360)/16.6ms = 117 Input power factor = cos (117) = 0.45

INPUT:

Input power = 124V*0.333A*0.45 = 18.6 watts Input Energy per cycle = 18.6watts/60Hz = 0.3 Joules

OUTPUT:

Output Energy per cycle = 2* (0.5*4F*(820V)2) = 2.7 Joules

Energy Gain =

Output Energy Input Energy

2.7 Joules 0.3 Joules
