SOCIALIZATION
It is a process of learning / acquiring one s culture. Learning how to live within in one s culture.
GOALS OF SOCIALIZATION
1. Impulse control and development of conscience. 2. Role presentation and performance. 3. Cultivation of sources of meaning. 4. Prepares human to function in social life.
TYPES OF SOCIALIZATION
PRIMARY The individual learns the culture as a member of particular culture. SECONDARY The individual learns the culture as a member of similar group. DEVELOPMENTAL Process of learning behavior in a social institution or developing ones skills within the social institution.
ANTICIPATORY Rehearses for future behavior or future skills. RE-SOCIALIZATION Discards former behavior pattern and accept new pattern as part of transition in one s life. BROAD Intended to promote independence, individualism, and self expression. NARROW Intended to promote conformity and obedience.
AGENTS OF SOCIALIZATION
THE FAMILY Family is responsible for among other things determining one s attitude towards region and understanding career goals. EDUCATION Education is responsible for socializing groups of young people in particular skills and values in society.
PEER GRUOPS Peers refer to people roughly the same age and/or who share other social characteristics. THE MASS MEDIA OTHER AGENTS i.e. religion, work place
