Arithmetic Progression is a sequence in which each term is found by ADDING the same number to the previous term.
Given x, y, z are consecutive terms of a series Then y-x=zy Now, The series is said to be in A.P.
Let the first term of an A.P. be a and common difference be d Then General form of A.P. a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d
To find 1. nth term of an A.P. an = a + (n - 1)d 2. Sum of first n terms of an A.P. n/2 [ 2a + (n - 1)d] or n/2 [first term + last term]
Lets Practice!
Find the
th 12
4 , 8 , 12 , 16 , 20
4 , 8 , 12 , 16 , 20
Here, the first term i.e. a is 4 To find the difference i.e. d 12 - 8 should be equal to 8 4 So, d = 4 And n = 12, no of terms
Now, to find 12th term an = a + (n 1) d a12 = 4 + (12 1) 4 = 4 + (11)4 = 4 + 44 = 48 So, the 12th term of the A.P. is 48
Now to find the sum of the 12 terms of the given A.P. Sn = n/2 [ 2a + (n - 1) d ] S12 = 12/2 [ 2 x 4 + ( 12 1) 4 ] = 6 [ 8 + (11)4 ] = 6 [ 8 + 44 ] = 6 [ 52 ] = 312
This is how Arithmetic Progression works and operate. This concept is widely used in many purposes and hence has a very large scope
