Misaki Suzuhara, a seventh grader, goes to Tokyo to live with her aunt Shouko Asami.

After arriving in the city, she watches the battle doll Athena on a big screen TV outside of the TV station. She becomes interested about Angelic Layer (the battle doll game, also called as Deus). Angelic layer is a battle between dolls/angels which they buy and design. The angels move with mental control by using the field called "layer."Layers are expensive but most users rent them. An eccentric man called Icchan encourages Misaki to build her own Angel. She names her Angel Hikaru. Even though she knows very little about the game, she joins tournaments and is assisted and watched by Icchan. Pretty soon his identity gets revealed as the co-creator of Angelic layer, Ichiro Mihara. She starts going to Eriol academy (kindergarten-high school) and becomes friends with Hatoko Kobayashi, a very intelligent and mature kindergarten girl who is a famous Deus and an Angelic Layer expert. Her incredible angel, Suzuka the Speed of Light Angel, is a favorite in tournaments. Misaki makes friends with K tar Kobayashi, Hatoko's big brother and his friend Tamayo Kizaki. Misaki misses her mother, she has not seen her since pre-school, and learns that her mother was champion of angelic layer. Now Misaki goes through tournaments and gets help from her friends.

Misaki attends Eriol Academy as a 7th Grader, along with her good friends Tamayo and Kotaro.

While wearing that white lab coat makes him seem very suspicious to the casual observer, Icchans intentions are wholly pure... we think. Sneaking up on Misaki at Tokyo Station like a devious secret agent, Icchan capitalizes on Misakis interest in Angelic Layer and rushes her to the toy store to help her buy all of the items necessary for her to participate in Angelic Layer competitions. Serving as Misakis mentor, Icchan teaches Misaki everything that she needs to know to play Angelic Layer and operate her Angel, Hikaru. Icchan also works diligently behind the scenes to advance Misakis career in the sport. Icchan is deeply entrenched in the Angelic Layer world, and goes to great lengths to make sure she gets everything she needs even if it means torturing his faithful assistant Ogata to get it.

A kindergartener at Eriol Academy and Kotaro's little sister, Misaki first encountered Hatoko on her way to school. Hatoko noticed Misaki's new Angel, Hikaru, sticking out of her bag and asked if she could see it. After inquiring why Hikaru had no clothes, Hatoko wrapped Hikaru in her handkerchief so that she wouldn't be undressed anymore. Misaki was surprised by how much Hatoko knew about Angelic Layer, being so young, but looks can be deceiving when it comes to Hatoko. Referred to as the "Miracle Kindergartener", Hatoko's Angelic Layer abilities are top notch. With her formidable Angel Suzuka, Hatoko is able to easily defeat her opponents in record time. Suzuka's speed on the layer is so fast, it's nearly impossible for her opponents to see her move, let alone engage her in a fight, before she knocks them out. Hatoko helps Misaki overcome her nervousness about competing in Angelic Layer, telling her to believe in herself and in Hikaru. It's easy to understand why Hatoko is already a champion once you've seen her in action.

Name: Kotaro Kobayashi Age: 12 Birthday: September 4 Zodiac Sign: Virgo Hometown: Tokyo Class: Middle School Student, Human Wrestling Mat

Kotaro Kobayashi is a 7th grader at Eriol Academy. Kotaro met Misaki on the way to school when he came across his little sister, Hatoko, talking to a new student. The two hit it off instantly, and became fast friends. Escorting Misaki to school, Kotaro was quickly clobbered by his long-time friend Tamayo. Tamayo has been using Kotaro as her personal practice dummy to try out all of the cool moves she learns studying the martial arts. Poor Kotaro had to learn karate just to be able to survive Tamayos 8-year onslaught. While Kotaro doesnt compete in Angelic Layer, he is quite familiar with it, since he is the one that takes his little sister Hatoko to the official competitions. Now, with Misaki involved with Angelic Layer, he has twice the reason to come out and root for her. Nice, earnest, and a little shy, its hinted that Kotaro might have a crush on Misaki. Something Tamayo catches onto and teases him mercilessly about.

Name: Tamayo Kizaki Age: 12 Birthday: April 17 Zodiac Sign: Aries Hometown: Tokyo Class: Middle School Student, Hyperactive Nutbar

Exploding onto the scene like a violent storm, the energetic Tamayo Kizaki has been both classmate and friend to Kotaro ever since the two were in Kindergarten. And in addition, for the last eight years, Tamayo has used Kotaro as her personal wrestling mat to try out all of the hot new techniques she has learned while studying various forms of martial arts. Tamayo is instantly taken with Misaki upon meeting her, and decided to bestow the nickname of "Misakichi" on her new friend. An enthusiastic and daring girl, Tamayo is very supportive of her friend Misaki, and always comes out to cheer for her when shes participating in Angelic Layer competitions. In fact, it was copying one of Tamayo's moves that helped Misaki win her very first Angelic Layer fight. Tamayo shares some of her fighting techniques with Misaki, regardless of how much Kotaro protests, in order to help her succeed in Angelic Layer. Tamayo also likes to tease Misaki and Kotaro about their relationship.

Name: Ohjiro Mihara Birthday: October 20 Status: Champion of Kansai Regional games Deus of Angel: Wizard Ohjiro is Icchan's younger step-brother. He has been involved with Angelic Layer for many years, in a large part because it was what brought him and Icchan together after their parents married each other. Ohjiro competes in Kobe and has been the champion of the Kansai Regional games, as well as being the runner-up in the national tournament for two consecutive years. He has a desperate desire to defeat Shuko Suzuhara's angel, Athena, to get over a childhood crush he had on her. His angel is Wizard. In the anime it is revealed that he is falling in love with Misaki.

Name: Shuko Suzuhara Birthday: November 28 Shuko is Misaki's mother and Shoko's elder sister. In the anime, it is explained that Shuko left a 5-year-old Misaki to be taken care of her grandparents under the guise of work, when in reality she was going to Tokyo in order to find a way to cure the neurological disease she had been inflicted with. This disease inhibits nerve signals from reaching to or from her legs. Ichiro Mihara was a doctor attempting to work with her to find a cure when the two started Angelic Layer as a way to do research and raise funds when their original research funding was cut off. Shuko, or "Shu" as she is called when playing Angelic Layer, is the undisputed champion with her angel Athena, having won each of the past three national championships. Over the past seven years, she has avoided meeting Misaki, afraid of what Misaki would think of her. She also works for the company behind Angelic Layer.

Name: Sai Jounouchi Birthday: February 15 Deus of Angel: Shirahime Sai Jounouchi, known as the "Ice Machine," started playing Angelic Layer at the request of her terminally ill sister Rin. Rin designed what the angel would look like, but died before Sai could create her. As a result, Sai states that her reason for playing Angelic Layer is "to become strong." Sai is from Kanagawa Prefecture and was the runner-up in the Kant Regional games in the past year. She is friends with Kaede, who went to the same middle school as Sai. Her angel is Shirahime.

Name: Kaede Saito Birthday: October 14 Kaede is a quiet and wise girl from Kanagawa and is friends with Sai Jounouchi. Her parents divorced and she lives with her father. She received an angel egg as a gift from someone in her father's company. Her personality does not appear to be one suited for Angelic Layer, as pointed out by her father when he comments that he never believed that he would see Kaede compete in a fighting game. Despite this, she is very adept at Angelic Layer. She treats her angel, Blanche, as her own daughter.

Name: Shoko Asami Birthday: August 12 Shoko is Misaki's aunt and Shuko's younger sister. She demands that Misaki and her friends call her "Miss Shoko" instead of "aunt" ("obasan" in Japanese) because she is still "an attractive young newscaster." She often covers Angelic Layer events for the local news station that she works for. Misaki lives with Shoko when she moves to Tokyo.
