Overall Student Challenge Question

Develop a spreadsheet tool which would allow businesses to calculate the greenhouse gas footprint of a major business conference, and a rating system which could be used to inform attendees on how greenhouse friendly the event will be. ACF believes that moving to a low pollution future will require significant change in the way we do business. The starting point for any company in reducing its greenhouse gas pollution is to calculate its greenhouse footprint. Business events, such as conferences and exhibitions, can be large emitters of greenhouse pollution and have a large greenhouse footprint. This may include, for example, the energy used during an event, and the transport of people to an event. Companies are increasingly seeking to measure the greenhouse gas emissions associated with events that they hold so that they can identify opportunities for reducing greenhouse pollution, and then offset remaining emissions by purchasing carbon offset credits (and therefore making the event carbon neutral). ACF would like to offer companies a tool which they can use to calculate the greenhouse gas footprint of a major business conference. They have engaged you, as a prospective Chartered Accountant, to develop a comprehensive yet user friendly solution to address this issue. Part 1: Develop a spreadsheet tool which would allow businesses to calculate the greenhouse gas footprint associated with a major business conference. Part 2: Develop a rating system which would show potential attendees, in an easily interpretable format, the greenhouse gas performance, or greenhouse friendliness of a major business conference Part 3: Develop a presentation to show how the system works, the benefits of the system and associated limitations.
