Die Stadt Halle an der Saale liegt im Sden Sachsen-Anhalts. Und wie der Name bereits suggeriert fliet die Saale durch sie hindurch. Die Stadt selbst hat ber 230.000 Einwohner und ist damit die grte Stadt Sachsen-Anhalts. Gleichzeitig bildet sie mit dem nahe gelegenen Leipzig einen Ballungsraum, von dessen Bedeutung die gesamte Region profitiert. Halle wurde vor ber 1.200 Jahren das erste Mal schriftlich in einer Urkunde erwhnt. Bereits damals war die Salzgewinnung von groer Bedeutung fr die Stadt. Durch diesen wichtigen Wirtschaftsfaktor wuchs die Stadt schnell. Und auch wenn man sich im nahe gelegenen Bad Drrenberg noch heute die Salzgewinnung vor Ort ansehen kann, hat das Salz als wirtschaftlicher Faktor fr die Region an Bedeutung verloren. Die Salzgewinnung in Halle wird mittlerweile fast nur noch zu Demonstrationszwecken praktiziert. Allerdings haben sich Teile der Tradition erhalten. Das weie Gold wie Salz auch genannt wird darf nur von Halloren gewonnen werden. Ursprnglich handelte es sich bei diesem Begriff um die Berufsbezeichnung der hallischen Salzsieder. Flschlicherweise benutzt man es heute allerdings auch fr Einwohner der Stadt, deren Familien schon ber mehrere Generationen dort leben. Nach einem alten Text gibt es noch zwei weitere Sorten von Menschen in dieser Stadt: zum einen die Hallenser, also Menschen die in der Stadt geboren wurden; und zum anderen das scherzhafte Hallunke, welches der Volksmund manchmal fr zugezogene Mitbrger verwendet. Allerdings wird man nur noch sehr selten ber die Bezeichnung Hallunke im Sinne eines zugezogenen Hallenser stolpern.

Vor der Wiedervereinigung war Halle ein wichtiger Chemiestandort. Buna und Leuna produzierten nicht nur Wrme und Energie, sondern auch Plaste und andere Kunststoffverbindungen. In Zeiten in denen noch viele Arbeitskrfte gebraucht wurden, entstand Halle-Neustadt. Halle-Neustadt ist ein Teil der Stadt Halle, der fast nur aus Plattenbauten besteht. Halle-Neustadt wurde damals extra fr die vielen Arbeiter in Buna und Leuna gebaut. Im Gegensatz zur Innenstadt ist Halle-Neustadt nicht historisch gewachsen, sondern wurde direkt in seiner heutigen Form entworfen. Nach der Wiedervereinigung wurden jedoch viele Arbeiter entlassen und Halles Bevlkerung schrumpfte von ber 300.000 auf die heutige Gre zusammen. Daher werden in jngster Zeit auch viele Plattenbauten abgerissen und durch Grnflchen ersetzt. Gleichzeitig ist Halle jedoch auch eine Universittsstadt. The City Halle an der Saale is located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt. And as the name already suggests, the river Saale flows through it. The city itself has more than 230.000 inhabitants and therefore it is the biggest city in Saxony-Anhalt. At the same time it forms a megalopolis with the nearby Leipzig, and the entire region profits from its importance. Over 1.200 years ago Halle was first mentioned in a document. Already at that time the production of salt held a lot of importance for the city. Because of this important economic factor the city grew very fast. Even though one can still watch salt production on site in the nearby Bad Drrenberg, salt has lost his meaning as an economical factor for the region. By now the salt production in Halle is almost solely for demonstration purposes. However, some parts of the traditions were conserved. The white gold as salt is also called can only be extracted by the Halloren. Originally this term was the job title of the salt cooks in Halle. Wrongly this is used nowadays for people whose family lived in Halle for many generations. According to an old text, there are two other sorts of people in this city: on the one hand there are the Hallenser, meaning people who were born in this city, and on the other side the jokingly used "Halunke" (scoundril), which the vernacular sometimes used for fellow citizens who moved to the city. Admittedly one will only here the term Halunke very seldomly these days, in the meaning of people who moved to the city. Before the German reunification Halle was an important location for the chemical industry. Buna and Leuna not only produced warmth and energy, but also plastics and other plastic conjunctions. In times when a lot of workers were still needed, Halle Neustadt was build. Halle-Neustadt is a part of Halle, which almost solely consists of prefabricated cement-slab buildings. At that time Halle-Neustadt was build specifically for the workers of Buna and Leuna. In contrast to Halle's city center it didnt grow historically, but was directly planned in the shape it has today. But after the reunification many workers were fired and Halle's population shrank from 300.000 to the size it has today. Therefore recently many prefabricated cement-slab buildings have been torn down and are being replaced by green areas.

At the same time Halle is also a university city. The University of Halle-Wittenberg should be the best known institution. Other important institutions are the Frankische Stiftungen or the Leopoldina. Every year they attract many young people to the city.
