Question for DC on facing tough 5-3 defense

DC I coach with CoachScotty who is on here alot. I am the HC/OC and we are running the
wing T. Its your alignment and my terminology with about 50% mixture of your plays and my
plays to fit my offensive scheme and coaching style. It has been working very well for me. He
is in Florida with his family this week so we havent had time to sit down and discuss game
plan.

We are playing a defense this week that has shut out just about every team in the league.
They are in first place and will most likely be who we face in our first playoff game in 4 weeks.
They run a 5-3 defense and so far this year that is the defense I have been most successful
against. The problem is that they are sooooo dominating that it isnt even funny. They have
extremely disciplined linebackers that play 4 yards off the ball and flow perfectly to the ball
avoiding traffic with their pursuit angles. They have tall athletic DE's that penetrate straight
ahead about 3 yards deep and take on blockers well. Their 3 interior D-linemen fire straight off
the ball low and hard. And their corners stay at home until the ball is coming right at them.
Team speed is a little above average, team strength is Above Average, and they play with
attitude and powerful.

This is the team we beat last year on their home field in the divisional championship game to
go on to the superbowl and they will be remembering that. If you were to be facing a team
like this where would you try to attack it? I know what I am wanting to do but Scotty said you
are the guru of the wing T and i dont want to be wrong. haha.

thank you for any input you may have

When running left, use the "slot" formation.

Run "20 Midline" from base.
Run "Slot, Pass Left". Odds are the OLBer won't pick up #1 Open (slot). You can run "Pass Left
QB Keep" with QB pump faking first to see who is open for sure. If the OLBer does follow the
slot, run "Slot 23 Draw" where slot runs his #1 route. If OLBer covers him again, FB will run to
daylight if DT's are in gaps.

If their DT's align in your gaps, guards fold block to M. WB also hits M.

On runs right, pass release the TE ("Draw"). If they don't cover the TE, throw to him. If they
cover him, keep running "36" because HB will hit air.

My favorite play to the right would be "Super, 36 Toss Draw". Their DE takes himself ouf the
play. The Sam LBer takes himself ouf the play chasing the TE. If DT's are in G/T gap, M is
doubleteamed, and safety has LG and LT to get through.

Throw "HB Pass, #2 Open".

Again, if DT's are in gaps, run "24" (no "draw") and "Left 32 Trap" with no one blocking M. Let
RT and TE double Sam.

Again, if DT's are in gaps, run "23" with folding guard. Also, "Right 45" (You can have QB toss
to the HB who hands to the WB).

If DT's are head up, run "Maxi, 20 Midline Trap" if you have a good center. If you don't, get a
good center and run it anyway. This play will just kill them. Also, "Super Power Wedge." "Left
32 Trap" and "Right 41 Trap" will also kill head up DT's.

To get outside, "47 Speed". If it works, run the "56 reverse". To run right, either run "Flip 48
Speed" or "Freeze, 38 Rocket Power". Don't run outside very much. The "nasty split" on the
right and the SE on the left should cause their DE's to become wasted players. Let them play
your 11 with 9.

A good center beats a 5-3.

DC and coach.
I would also run the 22 trap. We played the #1 team in our league. They won but..... in the
second half we started trapping left 22 trap then left 32 trap then Superpoer Wedge. Back to
the trap. Pretty sooon the backers were sitting on the tackles butt. Ran 47 speed TD. Did it
agin in the second seires play action on the 20 yard line td. So now they have given up 4
touchdowns on 6 games. Trap --- Trap --- Trap those 5-3 guys.

If your facing an aggressive D line then forget about telling your O line to beat their man like
in "ON" blocking...this will play to the strength of the D instead go to angle blocking, traps,
pulling and dbl teams. Everything DC mentioned above (you might have noticed) offers angle
blocking (midline) dbl teaming misdirection (draw) and pulling linemen for unbalance at the
POA.....throw them off guard by some different off balanced alignments, motions etc see what
there reaction is then exploit it.............DAMN! DC already said that with the pass left #1
route HB motion / 23 ....and the draw.........

what ever the OLB does he's wrong.......have fun!

man I wish I could coach on the same team as DC!
