Billy Donovan - Spread Pick and Roll Offense Opening Thoughts: Ball screens and pick and roll action are the hardest things to guard. Bigs who cant shoot, need to roll to the basket (or to the baseline) for shorter shots. When implementing this stuff, try to work backwards: When coaching defense, we gure out how were going to play screening action. On offense, try to: (a) run multiple screen action as a way to (b) disguise your screening action. Floor Spacing We want the oor extremely spaced. This forces the defense to choose. Flat pick and roll allows the point guard to go either way. forces the defense to decide. off this screen try to force two guys to guard the ball or get the ball to the middle of the lane. point guard needs to try and get the ball to the middle of the lane.

Re-Screen If the defense tries to force the ball one way or the other, the post simply re-screens

Post middle drive --> Kick 2nd screen Once the post penetration is stopped, kick the ball to the wing and then immediately screen again.

That wing needs to try and turn the corner. weak side forward looks for the duck in. screener goes to the baseline.

If the defense sags One of the hardest things for a post to cover is a guard moving full speed.

Against the Switch guard skip passes to the wing. screener immediately goes and screens the wing away.

On the screen: Screener roles and posts the mismatch Opposite forward sprints high post. We run 4 out motion with the mismatch always on the inside.

Screen Set - Play 1 Against teams that aggressively trap/show We may run the screening action to get the defense to show. Forwards at the mid post. Guards cross screen for one another. Forwards screen for whichever guard pops out to their wing. Guards can change up the way the use the post screens.

Screen Set - Play 1 cont. As the forward goes to set the screen, see if the defense is going to aggressively show. If they do - immediately slip to the hoop (then continue through to the other side).

The other forward sprints to set the second screen (or ashes to the slot) * Bigs need to understand when to slip and when to set the screen.

Difcult Defensive Situations 1. Getting back in transition and matching up 2. Constantly closing out. 3. Getting broken down by the dribble drive. So we want to try and do these things to the defense as much as possible

Screen Set - Play 2 Vs. Aggressive Jumpouts 1 dribbles to the 3s side of the oor. 3 cross screens for 2, then curls off the screen set by 4 to the weak side guard spot. 1 reverses the ball to 3. * forces their big men to defend a screen before we set the ball screen.

Screen Set - Play 2 cont. 5 back screens for 1, then sets a ball screen for 3. 3 looks to lob the ball to 1, then dribbles off the ball screen. 2 clears to the corner.

Screen Set - Play 2 cont. 5 rolls to the hoop. 4 pops up to space vacated by the screen/ roll action. On the catch, 4 quickly reverses the ball to 1 blast cutting up from the wing.

Screen Set - Play 2 4 immediately screens for 1. 1 tries to turn the corner and attack middle.

Alternate ways to initiate offense Under/Over 2 cuts under the double baseline screen set by 4 and 5. 3 fakes the hoop screen set in the previous two sets, then cuts overtop the two post players.

Alternate movement - cont. Force the post defenders to deal with multiple screening actions. Post Screen 5 cross screens for 4, the opens to the ball. 4 cuts off the screen and immediately sets a ball screen for 2. On the ball screen, both 1 and 3 space to the weak side.

Alternate movement - cont. Guard Screen: 1 down screens for 4, then clears to the strong side short corner. 4 cuts off the screen and immediately sprints to set the ball screen for 2. * This action is difcult for teams who like to aggressively hedge screens with the posts defender.

On the screen: 5 clears to the opposite post. 2 attacks the middle of the oor. 4 rolls to the basket. 1 lls in behind.
