This smaller Budget Summary table is formatted for Portrait-Orientation printing, rather than the main
Budget Worksheet's Landscape style. This table is intended to be copied and pasted into Word
documents, such as Proposals or Treatments. Simply select the entire table, choose "Edit/Copy," then
enter your Word document and choose "Edit/Paste Special." Choose "Paste Link: As Microsoft Excel
Worksheet Object." This will paste the table into your Word document, and will also reference back to the
IndieBudgetBuddy template, so that any changes will automatically update in Word.

FAQ

Why does the Film Feet Calculator round some items up?
- Two reasons. 1 - The "Total Hours of Raw Footage" is rounded
up because film transfers are calculated NOT on the hours of
footage, but rather on how many hours it takes the telecine operator
to do the transfer, which includes time loading and unloading the
film reels. Rounding up helps cover this extra time to make sure you
have a bit of contingency on your transfer costs. 2 - The "Total
Reels" is rounded up because no negative cutter will charge you for
6.5893625431 reels. But, they MAY charge you for 6.6 reels, or
they may even round all the way up to 7. Again, this is simply to
cover your butt for any situation.

What exactly is "contingency"?

- Contingency is the "Cover Your Butt" side of budgeting. In
filmmaking, anything can happen, and when it does, it costs serious
dough. The "Contingency" is designed to add a safety net to your
budget, so that just in case a terrible flood washes away your sets
(See Lost in La Mancha for examples), you'll have some extra cash
to keep the project alive.

Why are so many categories listed as "contingency" only?

- Indie filmmaking is insanely low-budget. In my world, actors
provide their own costumes, props are borrowed or bought at the
Salvation Army, and make-up consists of gallons of latex overnight-
shipped from Monster Makers. Thus, the contingencies in those
cases are the back-up in case bartering doesn't work. Again, to
cover your butt just in case five gallons of blood are poured down a
city storm sewer by the co-Director's angry father (speaking from
experience here.)

What's with the "Video Transfer to Film" option? Selective?

What the heck is that??
- The "Selective" Video-To-Film Transfer price is for silent
transfers of video footage intended to be incorporated into a Film
Negative Cut.

You forgot rental prices for tripods, a dolly, and a jib! You idiot!
- Not remotely. I own my own heavy-duty Bogen tripod. I own a
primitive PVC-pipe track dolly, and I own one of Promax's heavy-
duty Cobra Cranes. I recommend the same to everybody. Buy the
cheap stuff on your own. For $800, you can have all the camera
support equipment you could ever ask for. Also - most Grip trucks
will come equipped with a track dolly, and most of the HD camera
packages will also include very heavy-duty tripods..
You forgot rental on mics and an audio board! You
nincompoop!
- Again, not remotely. I own a shotgun mic, a sturdy boom pole, a
portable field mixer, and plenty of XLR cable. Again, buy your own!
$400 will buy all the basics, or tack on an extra grand for a nice
Lectrosonics wireless (a great addition to any sound kit.)

It's all nice and good, but I want to use the new Vision2 Kodak
film. Can I change that?
- Sure! Do whatever you want! This is your budget, so if you want
to use the Vision2 or EXR Black & White, just replace any of the
film stocks in Column A with your own, and change the
corresponding price in Column C.

What's with the "Days*" columns?

- These are there just in case you need something or someone for
a longer or shorter time than the overall "Production Days." Entering
a number of days in the "Days*" columns will cancel out the
"Production Days" and "Prod. Days Alt" entries for that item.

Why so few jobs in the "Crew" list? What about Line Producer
and Focus Puller and Production Assistant?
- You want to pay your PA's? You're a nicer person than I am! No,
just kidding. Those aren't on there because most extremely low-
budget films won't have them. Most extremely low-budget
filmmakers probably don't even know what a Line Producer is!
IndieBudgetBuddy is designed to keep everything extremely simple,
so listing off every last crew position, most of which will never be
filled in a sub-$500,000 movie, is just useless clutter. If you want to
take the extra unlisted jobs into account, just pick one of the listed
crew positions with the same pricing as your Line Producer, and
make the quantity 2, or 3, or 12.

What's with the "Film Scanning" and "Film Recording"

sections? Cineon? 2k? What the…?
"Film Scanning" and "Film Recording" are what need to be done if
you have Digital Effects that need to be done AND you're finishing
on Film. Cineon is Kodak's 10-Bit image format, and is the common
Scanning format for high-resolution Film images. This format retains
all of the film images' dynamic range, so that it can be adjusted ad
nauseum in Post. "2k" is the scanning resolution, which translates
to the following resolutions: 16mm - 856x620, Super 16mm -
1024x620, 35mm Academy Aperture - 1828x1332, 35mm
CinemaScope - 1828x1556.

What does the "DVD Authoring" price include?

- The DVD Authoring price takes the estimated final running time
from the Film Feet Calculator and compares it to the DiscMakers
price for authoring and encoding. The way it works in this situation
is $590 for 90 minutes of video ($2 per minute over 90), and
includes a Main Menu with up to 3 Sub-Menus, and up-to 25
chapter points. Discmakers also offers lower-cost encoding with
fewer options, as-well-as custom encoding. Visit their site for more
details.

What does the DVD-R Duplication rate include?

- It all depends on how many you get. If you need a short run of
less than 100 discs, the price includes black thermal printing on the
disc, and the discs come in simple paper sleeves. If you are
ordering 100, DiscMakers has a special price of $650 that includes
black thermal on-disc printing, and full-color covers in Amaray
cases (the DVD cases that we're all used to.) For over 100 discs,
the price reverts back to the black thermal on-disc printing with
paper sleeves.

There are more options that are not included in IndieBudgetBuddy

(for instance, slimline jewel cases for a small additional per-disc fee)
that you can view on DiscMakers' duplication website.

What do the "DVD-5 / DVD-9 Replication" costs include?

- With DVD-5 and DVD-9, the price includes the Glass Master
(from which all discs are replicated), Amaray-style cases with Full-
Color covers, and Three-Color On-Disc printing. Plus, all DVD
replication orders through DiscMakers also include a Free UPC Bar
Code, which would normally cost an insane $750. This is an
authentic bar code, too. So, you'll basically have a Store-Ready
DVD in your hands, that can be distributed to any retailer, including
Amazon.com.
Visit the DiscMakers site for more details.

What is the "Deluxe Option" for Authoring?

- DiscMakers "Deluxe Video Conversion" is $590, and includes
MPEG-2 encoding of 90 Minutes of Video, an interactive main
menu with up-to three sub-menus, and 25 custom chapter points.
For projects over 90-minutes, each additional minute is $2. Charges
for additional minutes are taken into account using
IndieBudgetBuddy's Film Calculator.

What's DVD-R, DVD-5, DVD+R DL, and DVD-9?

- These are the most common DVD formats. The amount of video
that each format can hold depends largely on the compression of
the video. DVD-R is a Single-Sided, Single-Layer General-Use
Recordable DVD that holds 4.7GB (4.7 "Gigs of Bytes," which
actually translates to 4.34 GB of storage), or roughly 100-120
minutes of video. DVD-5 is also a single-sided, single-layer disc,
and holds the same amount of information as a DVD-R, but is a
manufactured disc (it's much faster and cheaper to manufacture
large numbers of DVD-5s than it is to burn large numbers of DVD-
Rs.) DVD+R DL (burned) and DVD-9 (manufactured) are Single-
Sided, Dual-Layer discs which hold 8.5 GB (8.5 "Gigs of Bytes,"
which translates to 7.95 GB of storage), or roughly 200-220 minutes
of video.

Why does my film's Negative Cut require so many reels? I

thought film reels were 2000 feet long!

- Release Prints use 2000-foot reels. Negative cuts, however, use

1000-foot reels. This is because the raw stock used for the optical
sound track comes in 1200-foot rolls. Your final 35mm Release
Print will be broken into 2000-foot reels, roughly 20-minutes each.
