CALEFAX REED QUINTET

(The Netherlands) OBOE, CLARINET, SAXOPHONE, BASS CLARINET & BASSOON

Friday 09 September 19:30

Enoch Sontonga Hall Unisa Sunnyside Campus

Calefax was formed 25 years ago, and is known for its virtuoso performances, innovative programming and engaging concerts. The ensemble consists of Ivar Berix (clarinet), Oliver Boekhoorn (oboe), Jelte Althuis (bass clarinet), Raaf
Hekkema (saxophone) and Alban Wesly (bassoon).

The reed quintet performs standing up, often from memory. Most importantly, the five musicians arrange, recompose and interpret music from eight centuries to suit their unique line-up: early music, renaissance, baroque, impresssionism, jazz, or world premires, in the hands of Calefax it all sounds fresh and new. Recent tours have taken them to China, the UK, Sweden, Russia, Estonia, Japan, India and Italy, in addition to their busy concert schedule at home in the Netherlands. The German recording label MDG issues Calefaxs ever-growing discography, with consistently enthusiastic reactions from the international music press. A recent example is their arrangements of Nancarrow's fiendishly difficult Studies for Player Piano. Their programme for this event consists of arrangements of Vivaldi-Bachs Concerto in D minor, Mendelssohns
Ouverture Hebriden, two Preludes and Fugues by Shostokovich, Sweelincks Fantasia Chromatica, South African composer Kevin Volans Leaping Dance and Till Eulenspiegel by Richard Strauss.

The concert is presented by the Unisa Music Foundation. Tickets are sold only at the door at R80 for adults and R60 for students and pensioners. Entry is free for Unisa staff members on presentation of a staff card.
