HRPD GROUP

Scenario For the purpose of this assignment you are to imagine that: You have worked for TESCO as a Trainee Manager since completing an Honours degree in Business Management with the University of Sunderland five years ago and have recently been given your first job as a Manager in your won right in a new Tesco Express outlet. You are now really keen to have your first chance to practise in a real situation all the marketing theory you learned at university.

You have a new store and a new staff team and are very aware of the need for internal as well as external marketing. Your store is located in a small town (6500 peoples) in the north east of England where, to date, there have been only small individual shops with limited range of products. Local peoples are obviously unhappy with this as the nearest proper supermarket (not Tesco) is about 10 miles away. The shop which is now yours has previously been a family-run grocery store and Tesco is hoping that having got its foot in the door there will eventually be the chance to move on to a much larger site. Your main competition in the town will be the two co-op stores the largest (slightly bigger than you store) is at the top of the towns main street and the other, much smaller one, is at the bottom of the town near the harbour. You have visited both of these outlets and see them as being very ordinary also; you have been told that the previous owners of your own store saw themselves as aiming very much more at the top end of the local market. Your store is located in the main street about half way between that two Co-ops.

She has asked for your help, and specifically would like you to provide her with some information that will enable her to address the following: A comment was made at the senior management meeting the other day that our company is suffering in the marketplace, as we take a personal management approach rather than a HRM approach. I am not sure what the difference is. Could you fill me in on the background to what personal management is, and how HRM both compares with and differs from personal management.
