Processing of the Latent Image

1. Sequence/Steps of Events in Processing

a.) Wetting- swells the emulsion to permit subsequent chemical penetration. b.) Developing- Produces a visible image from the latent image. c.) Rinsing in stop bath- Terminates development and removes excess chemical
emulsion.

from the

d.) Fixing- Removes remaining silver halide from emulsion and hardens gelatin. e.) Washing- Removes excess chemicals f.) Drying- Removes water and prepares radiograph for viewing.

2-3. Chemicals involved and its Functions

Developer
a.) Phenidone- Reducing agent; produces shades of gray rapidly. b.) Hydroquinone- Reducing agent; produces black tones slowly. c.) Sodium carbonate- Helps swell gelatin; produces alkalinity controls pH. d.) Potassium bromide- Antilog agent; protects unexposed crystals from
chemical attack.

e.) Sodium Sulfite- Controls oxidation; maintains balance among developer

components.

f.) Glutaraldehyde- Controls emulsion swelling and enhances archival quality. g.) Chelates- Removes metallic impurities; stabilizes developing agent. h.) Water- Dissolves chemicals for use.

Fixer
a.) Acetic Acid- Neutralizes the developer and stops its action. b.)Ammonium Thiosulfate- Removes undeveloped silver
emulsion. bromide from

c.) Potassium Alum- stiffens and shrinks emulsion. d.)Sodium Sulfite- maintains chemical balance. e.) Acetate- maintains proper pH f.) Boric Acids/salts- Removes aluminum ions g.) Water- Dissolves other components
