COMMUNICATION

What is communication? What kinds of communication exist?

Communication is the process of expressing and exchanging ideas, thoughts, and feelings with other people and having those ideas understood by the people we are talking with. In order for communication to exist, there are four elements that need to be involved in the process: 1. Sender The communicator or sender is the person who is sending the message. 2. Message A communication in writing, in speech, or by signals. 3. Receiver The receiver is simply the person receiving the message, making sense of it, or understanding and translating it into meaning. 4. Feedback Feedback is that reaction to the message. It can be a verbal or nonverbal response. For the communication to result successful the reaction of the receiver needs to be what the communicator intended. Effective communication takes place with shared meaning and understanding, form both, sender and receiver. There are several types of communication, but the most important is the channel based communication which includes verbal communication (at the same time contains written and oral communication), and non-verbal communication (including body language, facial expressions and visuals diagrams or pictures). There are other classifications for communication such as the following: Formal/Informal Official/unofficial information Vertical/horizontal Superior-subordinate/peers Personal/impersonal Mutual influence/non-mutual influence Instrumental/expressive Job/non-job information transmission
