Lecturer: Katherine Szeto + Marta Kusztra Date: 03/01/2007 or 04/01/2007

Exercise 1: Design Future Tellers

Introduction: Some design precedes its time. It sets the trends that are yet
to come and explores issues we are not yet fully aware of. By
using the technology, the form, the content that is innovative,
bold and different it reveals the hint of the world we’ll be living
in.

It is not true that innovation refers only to product design and

new media design as the fields most exposed to technology.
Graphic design also responds strongly to the newly available
technologies. Innovation, however, need not be technology
driven. There are examples of graphic design projects that truly
leap into the future, because their message responds to the
problems that we will be facing in the future, their function
addresses needs we don’t yet fully recognize and/or their form
is different than anything else seen so far.

Brief: Pick 1 example of an ‘innovative’ design, as described

above and analyse why it precedes its time.

Prepare a 3-minute visual and oral presentation of this design

project. Your presentation should be illustrated with relevant
images and your analysis of its innovative features.

Learning Outcomes: [B4.] Identify and evaluate emerging design trends through
visual research.

Work Required: 1. CD with a PowerPoint presentation

2. Oral (viva) presentation

Deadline: January 10th or 11th (Week 2)

Assessment Strategy: The overall mark for this exercise will become part of the
assessment for the Assignment 1 (specifically, in its part
related to research.)
The mark for the Exercise 1 will be based on:
The choice of an example for presentation (30%)
Argumentation (50%)
Final presentation (20%)
