END OF TERM 1 EXAMS 2008

ELECTRICAL – PRINCIPLES E.I YEAR 2
TIME: 2HRS

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Attempt only five questions
• All questions carry equal marks.

1. (a). What factors that affect the amount of charge stored in a capacitor
(b). Two capacitors of 4m farads and 6m farads are connected in
parallel. A third capacitor of 5m farads capacitance is connected in
series with this arrangement, if the circuit is connected to 120v supply.
(i). What is the voltage enoss a 5m farads capacitor.
(ii). The charge held by each capacitor

2. (a). Explain what is meant by temperature co- efficient of resistance of

a material.
(b).The field coil of a motor has a resistance of 200 ohms at 20oc. Find:
(i). The resistance of the coil when the motor temperature rises to
40oC
(ii). At what temperature will the resistance be 215 ohms. Take co-
eff = 0.00426 referred to 0oC

(c). What is the difference between cold conductors and hot conductor,
give one example of each.

3. (a). Explain by the aid of a diagram the principle operation of a moving

iron repulsion. State the type of supply on which this equipment is
connected giving reasons for the answers
(b). State the advantages and disadvantages of the repulsion type.

4. (a). Describe the construction of air capacitor. State their uses (draw a
diagram)
(b). State the advantages of capacitors and disadvantages.

5. (a). State the rules used to determine the direction of the force acting
on a conductor carrying current perpendicular to the magnetic field.
(b). Give two practical application of the mechanical force exerted on a
current carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
(c). A conductor of active length 30cm carries a current of 100A and
lies at right angle to the magnetic field of density of 0.4, calculate the
force in Newton’s exerted on it. If the force causes the conductor to
move at a velocity of 10m/s. Calculate.

(i). The c.m.f induced.

(ii). The power in watts.

6. (a).Draw a labeled diagram of a simple cenelanebe cell.

(b). what is meant by:
(i). Local action. (ii). Discharged cell.

7. (a). Define the following terms:-

(i). Energy (ii). Power (iii). Force
(iv). Work and in each case state the standard units.
(b). State the types of forces known to you and explain them
