METEORITE EXERCISE

Download the “US Meteorites.csv” file from the M:/ drive.

Open ArcGIS

Load the text file into ArcMap.

Right click on the title to see the data contents.


Close the data table. Right click the title again and select “X-Y display.”
The GIS plots the meteorites from the latitude and longitude data included in the data
table.

Download and add the “States” shapefile.

Zoom in on Texas.
Use the select button to select Texas.
Look on the main menu bar. Select “Selection” and “Select by Location.” Make the
window look as below:
Now “Select by Attributes.”
You have now selected all the iron meteorites recovered from Texas.
Now lets open the meteorites attribute table by right clicking the title again. Make sure
the Show: All Selected button is set to show “Selected.” How many iron meteorites have
been recovered from Texas?
Does the distribution of meteorites seem uniform across the U.S.?

Using your sense of American geography, why are the meteorites distributed like they
are?

Now, use the spatial statistics tools to verify your observations.
