Neuberger 2 September 2011 Single Paragraph Essay On Dumpster Diving In On Dumpster Diving by Lars Eighner, the author tells readers about the life of a dumpster diver. The theme of this story shows that happiness is not measured by wealth, but rather the joy one has with life. Eighner shows his enthusiasm right away when talking about dumpsters. After researching what exactly a dumpster was, Eighner determined the following: Since then I have dutifully capitalized the word, although it was lowercased in almost all the citations Merriam-Webster photocopied for me (253). He came to this conclusion based on the fact that the Dempsey Dumpster company was in the definition. This same enthusiasm is seen throughout the story but the ending concludes the theme very nicely. The story is concluded with the following: Between us are the rat-race millions who nightly scavenge the cable channels looking for they know not what. I am sorry for them (265). The homeless dumpster diver feels sorry for the wealthy. That is all that needs to be said about the outlook Eighner has on life when he can live off others garbage and still be happy.
