PHENYL LIQUID (BLACK & WHITE)

Introduction:Phenyl is being used since long, for killing insects growing in gutters, lavatories and garbage
boxes. Most of the diseases are caused due to insects. Phenyl is an emulsion prepared by addition of rosin,
creosote oil and soap. It is made in white or brown colour in high viscosity liquid form and on mixing with water,,
it is converted into milky colour. In India, phenyl is available in three grades. In first grade of phenyl,
concentration of creosote oil is kept low. In Second grade, Creosote oil is added in medium quantity and in grade
3 it is added in huge quantity. Phenyl industry can be started with little investment even on a cottage scale.
Properties And Characteristics : It should immediately be dissolved while adding in water and the solution thus
prepared should be milky. The prepared phenyl should be of equal density and no ingredient should appear at the
bottom. After dissolving in water oil should not be formed on the surface of solution. It should have power for
killing insects and should exhibit the property of deodorization. It should not affect the human skin if kept for
3 minutes. It should be soluble in distilled water and upto 20% in hard water. The containers used for packing of
phenyl should bear label indicating firms name, trade mark, batch no. and other details. Uses and Applications
: Phenyl is mainly used for killing insects i.e. it acts as a disinfectant. Market Survey :Phenyl being a
conspicious disinfectant has a wider application everywhere and ever in demand. As the modern civilization is
getting hygiene -conscious therefore to maintain the sanitation phenyl comes to their rescue. Hence its present
demand &s well as future prospects are very bright therefore there is likelihood of persistent demand - supply
gap although for which a new entrepreneur will never feel frustrated.

Raw Material Required : Tallow, rosin, creosote oil and caustic soda lye. Plant And Machinery Required
1. Mixer equipped with agitator (Material of Construction Stainsteel). 1No. 2. Heater : 1No. 3. Vessel for
preparing lye : 1No. 4. Storage Tank : 1No.
Manufacturing Process :In a mixtrure of melted rosin and castor oil, caustic soda lye of 30 Be* is added and
thus soft soap is prepared. These constituents are mixed in such a way that 1-1.5% free alkali in the prepared
soap base may remain. In this way, the soft soap thus prepared is dissolved in hot water and then creosote oil
of requisite quantity is added. Now this mixture is stirred thoroughly so that it may be homogeneous. The liquid
thus prepared is either of black or brown colour. It is packed in the containers and sold in the market. For the
manufacture of Hospital Quality Phenyl, rosin is melted on slow fire and then groundnut oil is added. As soon
as smoke starts to come out, add caustic soda solution which is prepared previously and stirring is continued
so that saponification is completed in all respects. Now add some more fresh water and stir thoroughly. In
completion of saponification a material like jelly is observed. Now remove the vessel from the fire, add one or
two gallon of water so that soap solution is prepared. Then pour light creosote oil of requisite quantity and
carbolic acid. Now add the remaining water and stir the whole mass properly so that a good emulsion of soap and
oil could be obtained. Keep this mixture for about 2-3 days in big drums and then pack in containers.
