Generous pledge from
Helmand province, attended the inauguration of the new building. The construction work had begun 2 years ago, and was finally completed at cost of $900,000. Funding for the project was provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The building has two floors, 19 offices and two conference rooms. Meanwhile in the western province of Herat, construction projects on two new factories has begun. Bakhtar News Agency reported today that a steel mill factory will be built in the province that will produce on a daily basis 150 tons of constructional wire. Same time, Pajhwok Afghan News reported that an iron-melting factory will be built in the province that will use old iron and imported iron from other countries to create 150 types of construction materials. The factory will be built in the industrial park that was established in 2002 by former provincial governor, Mohammad Ismail Khan. The PAN report said that the factories in the industrial park include manufacturers, such as those that make iron materials, utensils, ghee, cool drinks and washing liquids, as well as motorbike repair workshops. Finally, on March 5th, Afghanistans Ministry of Education announced that 2 new school buildings were inaugurated in Herat. One building is for the Abu Mansur Ali Boys High School in Zinda Jan district and the other is for the Qool Girls and Boys Middle School in Shindand district. Both buildings were built at a cost of 290,000 Euros, and funding for the project was provided by the Italian government. The buildings took 5 months to build. Each school buildings has 16 classrooms, 8 administrative rooms, and 6 restrooms.
Sports fields, surrounding walls, and water wells were put in for the schools as well. Moreover, each school was given 300 tables and chairs. The Ministry of Education told Bakhtar News Agency that due to classroom shortages, previously the students of these two schools were taught under tents.
Pajhwok Afghan News (PAN) reported that the first-ever tuberculosis (TB) laboratory was opened in the western province of Herat. The laboratory has the capacity to diagnose patients from five different provinces Herat, Nimroz, Badghis, Farah and Ghor. The lab is part of the Herat Zonal Hospital, which took three years to complete at a cost of one million US dollars. PAN reported that the funds were provided by the government of Italy. Daoud Saba, the provincial governor of Herat province, told everyone in an inaugural ceremony for the lab that patients would no longer need to go abroad for tests and treatment of the disease. TB is a preventable and treatable disease, but unfortunately, it is still a major public health issue in Afghanistan. The World Health Organization reported in 2010 that over 50,000 people tested positive for TB in Afghanistan. Hopefully, with the increase of labs such as the one that has been opened

in Herat, more and more Afghans will be treated. In other health news, Afghanistans Bakhtar News Agency reported that a health clinic will be built in Zaranj city, located in Nimroz province. The clinic will be constructed on 200 square meters of land, and will be built at a cost of 1,700,000 afghanis (approximately $37,660). According to media reports, the new museum building will have state of the art security, conservation and administrative space and will include beautiful new exhibition space. The new building will one day be the home for the Hidden Treasures of Afghanistan Exhibition. The exhibit toured various museums in the United States in 20082009-, and is currently on display in London at the British Museum. The exhibit consists of carved ivories from Bagram, gold jewelry from ancient nomads, and Hellenistic sculptures found in Northern Afghanistan. The land for the site of the new museum building was donated by Afghanistans Ministry of Defense. My vision is for a museum that will be an even greater source of pride for Afghans from all regions. Afghans need a museum so that our children can learn about our nations rich cultural history at the crossroads of East and West, Makhdoom Raheen said at the ceremony. The Afghan National Museum was built in 1919.
I nominated Dr. Yacoobi for this award due to her long time efforts to empower women and communities to bring education and health services to poor rural and urban girls and women, as well as other disenfranchised Afghans, said Dr. Neese. Her organization was the first to offer human rights and leadership training to Afghan women in the 1990s. She is an inspiration to Afghan and American women. Her visionary work is an example to everyone that women can persevere through the most challenging times to help build their country and educate their people. Dr. Yacoobi was honored. This is both an honor for me and an honor for the women of Afghanistan who are creating new lives for themselves through their pursuit of education, their creativity, and their drive to succeed under the most difficult of circumstances, she said. When women gain knowledge and have new opportunities for bringing some kind of economic security to their families, they become more valuable in the eyes of others and then see that value in themselves. Thank you for honoring all of us. About Dr. Sakena Yacoobi Dr. Sakena Yacoobi is Executive Director of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), an Afghan women-led NGO she founded in 1995. Established to provide teacher training, education and health services to women and children, over 8 million have benefited from AILs programs to date. AIL was the first organization to offer human rights and leadership training to Afghan women in the 1990s. AIL supported 80 underground home schools for 3000 girls in Afghanistan during the Taliban regime. AIL was first to open Womens Learning Centers for Afghan women a concept now copied by many organizations throughout Afghanistan.
To Be Expanded
In an effort to preserve Afghanistans cultural heritage, in a ceremony held in the Nuristani room at the National Museum of Afghanistan, 20th of March, the United States Ambassador to Afghanistan, Karl W. Eikenberry, pledged $5 million to support the planning, designing and constructing of a new museum building. Afghanistans Ministry of Information and Culture, headed by Makhdoom Raheen, also committed $2 million to support the new museum building.

Global Award!
On 11th of March, in Boca Raton, Florida, Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, the Executive Director of the Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL), received the inaugural Enterprising Womens 2011 Global Womens Hall of Fame award.
The use of foreign words in conversation and on advertising billboards has some experts concerned about the effect on Afghanistans native languages. Afghanistan has two official languages, Dari and Pashto, and several unofficial languages that are spoken by the majority in an area, such as Uzbeki, Turkmani, Pachaie, Nuristani, Baluchi and Pamiri.
Mohamamd Saleem, a hairdresser in Taimani, has a board announcing his English Hair Fashion Style shop, although it is written in both Dari and English. He said most barbers use English, and were copying each other. Hairdressers think that if they choose English names, they look chic and will appeal more to youth.
in our life, our conversation should reflect that and change and progress as well. Using English words during our day-to-day conversations is a sign of progress because it is an international language. However, language experts are worried about the effect on local languages. Mohammad Hussain Yamin, a language and literature professor at Kabul University, described the use of English words as a betrayal of the native language. He warned that the purity of the language would be corrupted, and has called for a working group to be set up to find new Dari/ Pashto words if needed. The media should also play a role by making people aware of the importance of preserving and strengthening the countrys languages, and in broadcasting/printing in those languages. Habibullah Rafi, an academic and author, has also raised concern over the foreign invasion. If no attention is paid to this, a day will come when we only have prepositions and suffixes in our languages. All other words will be foreign, Rafi said. He also called for a council of scholars and academics to address the problem. Sayed Makhdum Rahin, the minister for information and culture, described the creep of foreign words into conversation as an infection and blamed the prevalence of NGOs and foreigners working for them. The use of the English word of guest house instead of the Afghan word in a nation which has used this word for hundreds of years is an embarrassment. Five years ago, the problem was not so prevalent, but even then a letter was sent to organisations to remove all foreign words from their banners and signs. Rahila Kohistani, head of the culture department at the Kabul municipality, said that according to regulations, advertising bill boards should be in the native languages of the country. However, their efforts to stop the practice had failed because many businesses using English words were owned or linked to influential people. As an example, she explained that when they approached the Parawila hotel to ask it to change its name, the hotel refused, saying it would only do so if the five-star Kabul Serena hotel was also forced to change its name. Abdul Fatah Omary, who runs the hotel, said Parwila is a German word. In the beginning, no one complained about the name, but once the hotel became popular, a delegation came from the ministry of information and culture and municipality to ask us to change the name. He said the owner was from Logar province and now lives in Germany and has refused to change the name unless other hotels using English or foreign words do so. Omary said it would cost a lot to change the name of the hotel.

The constitution allows for the media to print or broadcast in any of the accepted languages, and states that the government should take steps to protect and nurture those languages. English is not one of them. However, in Kabul, English words such as general store, guest house, chicken soup and others pepper the advertising boards of businesses. Many English words are also slipping into every day conversation, such as soap, fashion, interview, even though all these words have a Dari or Pashto translation. Shah Barat, whose grocery store in Kabul is called FIFA General Store, said the name was chosen some years ago by his friends. He said he had no idea what FIFA meant, but knew it was famous so decided to go with that. FIFA is footballs world governing body. He said his aim was not to attract foreigners, and so had written the name of the store in Dari. The Spinneys Super Market in Sher Pur, however, caters almost exclusively to foreigners, and so its sign is written in English. Javid Ahmad, a worker at the store, said the owner had travelled overseas and thought the sign should be written in English as it would show that the store is international.

Public views differ about such banners and boards. Shir Shah, a student at Parmakhtag Institute in Kabul, said English signs can be helpful for people who come from abroad. However, Ahmad Ramish, a shopkeeper in the fourth Macro Ryan area whose sign is written in Dari, said he did not see the point of using English. If we have nice Dari equivalent words, why we should use foreign terms? English is also becoming common in conversation. An employee of a foreign non-governmental organisation, who wished to remain anonymous, said he used English words, such as management, message and proposal. At first, he said, it was just a way to learn English, but now it had become a habit. The NGO worker said he was worried that using English all the time could harm the Afghan language. He said he was making an effort to break his habit. Ahmad Saboor, a social science student at Kabul University, also uses some English words such as interview and busy, even though he does not speak fluent English. As everything is in progress and changing

SME
This outperformance of macroeconomic growth indicators has held true during times of economic expansion as well as during the recent financial crisis. For example, in 2009, the average SEAF SME experienced an 11% growth in revenues and a 9% growth in employment, whereas the average corresponding GDP growth and national employment growth in their respective countries were 6% and -1%, respectively. This data supports the view that SMEs can play a meaningful role in softening negative economic impacts and driving economic recovery. We believe this is due in part to their focus on local opportunities, their relative insulation from global value chains, and their generally greater ability to operate flexibly in uncertain markets.
We are leading financial institution in AFGHANISTAN by working closely with SMEs to offer products and services that promote sustainable growth and increased valuation.

Albert Einsetin
was a German-born (1879) theoretical physicist who discovered the theory of general relativity, effecting a revolution in physics. For this achievement, Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics. He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect. He enjoyed classical music and played the violin. One story Einstein liked to tell about his childhood was of a wonder he saw when he was four or five years old: a magnetic compass. The needles invariable northward swing, guided by an invisible force, profoundly impressed the child. The compass convinced him that there had to be something behind things, something deeply hidden. Even as a small boy Albert Einstein was self-sufficient and thoughtful. According to family legend he was a slow talker, pausing to consider what he would say. His sister remembered the concentration and perseverance with which he would build houses of cards. In 1894, his fathers company failed: direct current (DC) lost the War of Currents to alternating current (AC). In search of business, the Einstein family moved to Italy, first to Milan and then, a few months later, to Pavia. When the family moved to Pavia, Einstein stayed in Munich to finish his studies at the Luitpold Gymnasium. His father intended for him to pursue electrical engineering, but Einstein clashed with authorities and resented the schools regimen and teaching method. He later wrote that the spirit of learning and creative thought were lost in strict rote learning. In the spring of 1895, he withdrew to join his family in Pavia, convincing the school to let him go by using a doctors note. During this time, Einstein wrote his first scientific work, The Investigation of the State of Aether in Magnetic Fields.

Einstein applied directly to the Eidgenssische Polytechnische Schule (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. Lacking the requisite Matura certificate, he took an entrance examination, which he failed, although he got exceptional marks in mathematics and physics. The Einsteins sent Albert to Aarau, in northern Switzerland to finish secondary school. While lodging with the family of Professor Jost Winteler, he fell in love with Wintelers daughter, Marie. (His sister Maja later married the Wintelers son, Paul.) In Aarau, Einstein studied Maxwells electromagnetic theory. At age 17, he graduated, and, with his fathers approval, renounced his citizenship in the German Kingdom of Wrttemberg to avoid military service, and in 1896 he enrolled in the four year mathematics and physics teaching diploma program at the Polytechnic in Zurich. Marie Winteler moved to Olsberg, Switzerland for a teaching post. Einsteins future wife, Mileva Mari, also enrolled at the Polytechnic that same year, the only woman among the six students in the mathematics and physics section of the teaching diploma course. Over the next few years, Einstein and Maris friendship developed into romance, and they read books together on extra-curricular physics in which Einstein was taking an increasing interest. In 1900 Einstein was awarded the Zurich Polytechnic teaching diploma, but Mari failed the examination with a poor grade in the mathematics component, theory of functions. There have been claims that Mari collaborated with Einstein on his celebrated 1905 papers, but historians of physics who have studied the issue find no evidence that she made any substantive contributions. He was visiting the United States when Hitler came to power in 1933, and did not go back to Germany, where he had been a professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences. He settled in the U.S., becoming a citizen in 1940. On the eve of World War II, he helped alert
President Franklin D. Roosevelt that Germany might be developing an atomic weapon, and recommended that the U.S. begin similar research. Later, together with Bertrand Russell, Einstein signed the RussellEinstein Manifesto, which highlighted the danger of nuclear weapons. Einstein taught physics at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey, until his death in 1955. When he came to USA, he joined the staff of the newly created Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He accepted this position for life, living there until his death. Einstein is probably familiar to most people for his mathematical equation about the nature of energy, E = MC2. Albert Einstein wrote a paper with a new understanding of the structure of light. He argued that light can act as though it consists of discrete, independent particles of energy, in some ways like the particles of a gas. A few years before, Max Plancks work had contained the first suggestion of a discreteness in energy, but Einstein went far beyond this. His revolutionary proposal seemed to contradict the universally accepted theory that light consists of smoothly oscillating electromagnetic waves. But Einstein showed that light quanta, as he called the particles of energy, could help to explain phenomena being studied by experimental physicists. For example, he made clear how light ejects electrons from metals. There was a well-known kinetic energy theory that explained heat as an effect of the ceaseless motion of atoms; Einstein proposed a way to put the theory to a new and crucial experimental test. If tiny but visible particles were suspended in a liquid, he said, the irregular bombardment by the liquids invisible atoms should cause the suspended particles to carry out a random jittering dance. One should be able to observe this through a microscope, and if the predicted motion were not seen, the whole kinetic theory would be in grave danger. But just such a random dance of microscopic particles had long since been observed. Now the motion was explained in detail. Albert Einstein had reinforced the kinetic theory,
and he had created a powerful new tool for studying the movement of atoms. On April 17, 1955, Albert Einstein experienced internal bleeding caused by the rupture of anabdominal aortic aneurysm, which had previously been reinforced surgically by Dr. Rudolph Nissenin 1948. He took the draft of a speech he was preparing for a television appearance commemorating the State of Israels seventh anniversary with him to the hospital, but he did not live long enough to complete it. Einstein refused surgery, saying: I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly. He died in Princeton Hospital early the next morning at the age of 76, having continued to work until near the end. Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers along with over 150 non-scientific works. His great intelligence and originality have made the word Einstein synonymous with genius.

Running History Humans are born to run. Its just that we use it in more ways than our early ancestors. In the early days, humans ran to hunt down their prey, most of which are faster than they are. Therefore, they had to find the means to catch up with them. But later in history, humans found other uses for the faculty of running and that includes the running competitions we have today. How did these competitions come to be? This section will deal with that and a lot more. Track Running Modern organized track running has only been around for less than 200 years but it traces its roots to the old Greek Olympics. The first Greek Olympics was held in 776 BC where the only event held was a foot race. There were other games organized after that including the Roman Games in the Roman Era. However, games at the scale of the Greek Olympics and Roman Games were no longer held after the fall of the Roman Empire. It was only in the 19th century when the track running events started to become really organized. It was especially apparent during the first modern Olympics in 1896. Cross Country Running Cross country running, meanwhile, traces its roots in the early 19th century England. Originally known as paper chase, this sport used to be a game played by two groups of runners in a randomly chosen trail. The first group drops paper markers across the course while the other group chases the first one by following the paper trail they left behind. In 1878, the game was introduced to the United States by William C. Vosburg. Although it is initially intended to be a training exercise for track and field events, cross country running eventually became recognized as a sport in its own right. Today, it is a popular sport not only among men, but also among women.

Fell Running
Just like cross country running, fell running originated from England, though it was also played in Scotland and Wales. In Scotland, they were usually held during fairs or highland games. They were held primarily to show the physical abilities of the competitors. From simple events during fairs, its popularity soared during the Victorian times and from there, the modern form of fell running came to be.
Road Running
Of all the road running events, the Marathon is probably the most popular. It is based on the legend of the Greek soldier Pheidippides who ran from Marathon to Athens to announce that they have defeated the Persians and died shortly afterwards. Compared to the other running sports, the marathon as we know it is a relatively new sport. It was organized only during the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Its first winner was a Greek named Spiridon Louis, clocking in 2 hours 58 minutes 50 seconds, which is almost an hour slower than the current record of 2 hours 4 minutes and 55 seconds set by Kenyan Paul Tergat during the 2003 Berlin Marathon. During the 1896 Olympics, the distance covered by the runners varied greatly from the marathon we know now. It used to be only 40 miles long. However, it changed several times until finally settling to the current distance of 42.195 kilometers. Running has been a natural human activity since time immemorial. Today, it is one of the most well-loved lifestyle activities around. Running will not surely lose its appeal to man as it has a lot of advantages. Probably, new variations will be devised by enthusiasts to make running more innovative and challenging that will eventually be added to the history of running.
The fact that times have consistently gotten faster makes an all-time comparison difficult. This list focuses on recent history, and all runners featured on the list performed at world level at some point during the 20 years prior to 2011. Usain Bolt Bolt sent shock waves through the world in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, shattering the world 100-meter record while appearing to slow down and celebrate the last 20 meters. He followed that victory up with the 200-meter and relay gold medals, setting world records in all three events. Hichan El Guerroj Having achieved two Olympic, four World Championship and three World Indoor Championship gold medals, El Guerroj is one the great world runners.
Haile Gebrselassie Gebrselassie has broken 26 world records and is the owner of two Olympic, three World Championship and three World Indoor Championship gold medals. Michael Johnson Winner of four Olympic gold medals and eight World Championship titles, Johnson would be included in any all-time top 10. Florence Griffith-Joyner Holder of the 100- and 200-meter world records that have stood for more than 20 years. Flo-Jo was the winner of three Olympic and one World Championship Gold medal, she had a world class career, but her life was tragically cut short when she died a tragic and untimely death at the age of only 38. Tegla Loroupe A Kenyan native who is a world record holder for the 20 km, 25 km and 30 km events, Loroupe is previously the marathon world record holder. She is a two-time winner of the New York City Marathon and is the first African woman to do so. Loroupe is also a top 10 achiever off the track, successfully pursuing a career as a global spokeswoman for peace, womens rights and education. Svetlana Masterkova The glamorous Masterkova is a two-time Olympic gold medal winner and the current world record holder for the mile. Her double gold medal success in 1996 came after a 2-year maternity leave absence. Mizuki Noguchi Known as the Queen of the Half-Marathon, the Japanese runner is world record holder in the 25 km and 30 km events. She also won gold in the 2004 Olympic marathon in a race considered the most brutal of all time, due to the oppressive heat and air pollution in Beijing. Paula Radcliffe Radcliffe is a celebrity in her native U.K., having won BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2002 and also been awarded an MBE from the Queen. Radcliffe holds a World Championships gold medal and is the world record holder for the womens marathon. Toshihiko Seko A simply magnificent marathon runner, Sekos lifetime commitment to the marathon is illustrated by his quote The marathon is my only girlfriend; I give her everything I have. Seko has marathon wins at the events in Fukuoka (four), Boston (two), New York City and London.

One of the pieces of a 2,600 year old brain after removal from the skull.
The brain-containing skull was found at Heslington, Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. OConnor and her team suspect the site served a ceremonial function that persisted from the Bronze Age through the early Roman period. Many pits at the site were marked with single stakes. The remains of the man were without a body, but the scientists also found the headless body of a red deer that had been deposited into a channel. Laser imaging, chemical analysis and other examinations revealed that the brain naturally preserved over the millennia. The scientists found no evidence for bacterial or fungal activity, and described the tissue as being odorlesswith a resilient, tofu-like texture. The condition of the brain is remarkable for its age. In the air, even in the chill of a hospital mortuary, brain tissue very quickly decays to liquid before muscle and other soft tissues show much evidence of decay, OConnor said.
She and her colleagues suggest that a fortuitous series of events -- for the brain and science, not the victim -- led to the organs preservation. Shortly after the man was killed, his head must have been placed, or fallen into, the waterlogged pit that was free of oxygen. While other soft human body parts may not preserve well under such conditions, the wet environment appears to be perfect for keeping brains fresh, due to the very different chemistry of brain tissue, OConnor said. The researchers dont think the violent way the man was killed aided his brains preservation. While severing his head separated it from the rest of his body, including the bacteria-filled gut, the decapitation would also have produced a gaping wound that would have been open to immediate infection from micro-organisms involved in putrefaction. The quick burial in conditions not suited for microbial activity likely prevented that from happening. In addition to describing this unusually well preserved brain, the journal paper provides the first in-depth study of other prehistoric human brains and soft human tissues discovered by scientists. They include the body of the 5,000-year-old Tyrolean Ice Man, the Inca mummies of the high Andes, the tanned bog bodies from across Northern and Western Europe, good condition bodies sealed in lead coffins -- such as the St. Bees man, and crypt burials at places like Spitalfields Church, London, where bodies with surviving brain tissue were found. Glen Doran, chair of the anthropology department at Florida State University, told Discovery News that two aspects of the new study immediately struck him as notable. First, he said, such preservation is testimony to the amazing preservation in wet sites. Truly amazing things come out of the muck. The second, he added, is the absolutely stellar analysis brought to bear on this special find. Based on this discovery and other known prehistoric, intact human brains, he agrees that rapid burial in an aqueous environment, as well as near-continual submersion, are essential to human brain tissue preservation. The cranium is well designed to protect the brain in life and can, under the right circumstances, remain on duty long after the normal expectation of service, he said.

A brain in near-perfect condition is found in a skull of a person who was decapitated over 2,600 years ago
One of the worlds best preserved prehistoric human brains was recently found in a waterlogged U.K. pit. The brain belonged to an Iron Age man who was hanged and then decapitated, with his head falling in the pit shortly thereafter. Scientists believe that submersion in liquid, anoxic environments helps to preserve human brain tissue.
A human skull dated to about 2,684 years ago with an exceptionally preserved human brain still inside of it was recently discovered in a waterlogged U.K. pit, according to a new Journal of Archaeological Sciencestudy. The brain is the oldest known intact human brain from Europe and Asia, according to the authors, who also believe its one of the best-preserved ancient brains in the world. The early Iron Age skull belonged to a man, probably in his thirties, lead author Sonia OConnor told Discovery News. Cause of death is rarely possible to determine in archaeological remains, but in this case, damage to the neck vertebrae is consistent with a hanging. A newlywed farmer and his wife were visited by her mother, who immediately demanded an inspection of the place. While they were walking through the barn, the farmers mule suddenly reared up and kicked the mother-in-law in the head, killing her instantly. At the funeral service a few days later, the farmer stood near the casket and greeted folks as they walked by. The pastor noticed that whenever a woman would whisper something to the farmer, he would nod his head Yes and say something. Whenever a man walked by and whispered to the farmer, he would shake his head, No and mumble a reply. Curious, the pastor later asked the farmer what that was all about. The farmer replied, The women would say, What a terrible tragedy and I would nod my head and say, Yes, it was. The men would ask, You wanna sell that mule? and I would shake my head and say, Cant. Its all booked up for a year.
