A. Identify the general characteristics of the AK-47. To understand the AK47 better we will briefly discuss the history of the rifle: The AK-47 is a selective fire weapon designed by the Soviets in 1946, which fires a cartridge intermediate in power between submachine gun and rifle cartridges. It has mild recoil which gives it the capability of delivering effective full automatic fire up to 300 meters. In addition to the Soviet Union, the Peoples Republic Of China, East Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, North Korea, Hungary, and Yugoslavia have manufactured the AK-47. B. Identify the technical data of the AK-47: In order to fully understand the capabilities and become a better AK47 operator, there is some essential technical information that you will need to know. Cartridge 7.62x39mm Feed Magazine Magazine Capacity 30 Rds Gas operated Weight 9.5 lb Length 34.2 in Rate of fire semiautomatic 40rpm Rate of fire automatic 100 rpm Rate of fire cyclic 600-800 rpm Maximum effective range 400 meters MP 2. OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES A. Loading, Firing, and Unloading Procedures: We will now talk about the basic operational procedures of loading, firing and unloading your AK47. 1. Loading: First place a round between the feed lips. Press it down until it locks inside the magazine. Repeat until magazine is full. The standard AK47 magazine will accept 30 rds. Cant the magazine forward so the lug on the front of the magazine engages with its recess

in the magazine well; then pull the magazine to the rear until it snaps into place. 2. Firing: Pull charging handle, fully to the rear and release. NOTE: DO NOT RIDE CHARGING HANDLE FORWARD! Place the selector on the desired position (automatic middle position, and semi automatic lower position) . Aim using a normal sight picture and pull the trigger. CAUTION: Always keep the selector in the safe (upper) position until the weapon is ready to be fired. 3. Unload/Clear: Remove the magazine by pressing the magazine catch toward the magazine; then swing the magazine forward and out of the receiver. Pull the operating handle fully to the rear, inspect the chamber and receiver. If no cartridge is present, release the operating handle and pull the trigger. B. Perform the zeroing procedures for the AK-47: We will now discuss how to zero your AK47 rifle so you can effectively hit what your are aiming at. All of your zeroing will be done from the front sight. If the strike of the bullet is below the control point, the front sight should be screwed in. If above, it should be screwed out. If the strike of the bullet is to the left of the control point, move the front sight to the left ; if to the right, then moved the front sight to the right. Moving the front sight in any direction 1mm, changes the strike of the bullet 26cm at 100 meters. One full turn on the front sight post moves the strike of the bullet 20cm when fired at 100 meters. Verify changes on your front sight with four well aimed shots. Your AK47 is now sighted in and ready for accurate use! MP 3: Maintain the AK-47 Assault Rifle: APG 1-5 9/28/2011

Conditions: Given an AK 47 Assault Rifle, 1-magazine, 7.62x39-mm ammunition, and small arms accessory case with the following cleaning materials: clean wiping rags, bore brush, chamber brush, toothbrush, cleaning rod, small arms swabs, pipe cleaners, cleaner lubricant and preservative (CLP), and rifle bore cleaner (RBC).

Standards: Disassemble,Clean, inspect, and lubricate the rifle and magazine so that they function correctly. Reassemble.

A.

Care and Cleaning:

The AK-47 rifle must be kept in proper working order and be ready for action. This is achieved by timely and capable cleaning and lubricating. The rifle should be cleaned: During preparation for firing. After firing ball or blank cartridges. The receiver, bore, chamber, gas piston, slide and bolt are cleaned and lubricated immediately after firing. Final cleaning takes place daily over the next 3-4 days. During any combat situation and extended exercises; daily during non-combat action periods. No less than once per week if the rifle is not used. Only place oil on well cleaned and dry metal services immediately after cleaning so that moisture is not allowed to form on the metal. Disassembly: After each use it will be necessary to clean and maintain your AK47. You will now learn how to break it down into its field stripped condition that is needed for proper maintanence.
B.

Remove the magazine and pull the charging handle fully to the rear. Inspect the chamber and receiver to make sure no cartridges are present. Release the charging handle and squeeze the trigger. Press the end of the driving spring guide into the bolt cover, hold the guide in and slip the bolt cover off the guide, rear end first. APG 1-6 9/28/2011

Push forward on the end of the driving spring guide, disengage it from its seat in the receiver. Pull the driving spring assembly out of the bolt carrier. Pull the charging handle fully to the rear. Lift the bolt carrier slightly upward, pull to the rear and remove it. Press the bolt into the carrier until the bolt operating lug can be twisted free of its cam path in the carrier. Pull the bolt straight out of the carrier. Turn the gas cylinder tube lock upward to free the gas cylinder tube. Pull the rear of the hand guard upward and remove the tube.

C. Reassembly: Place the gas cylinder in the front opening of the gas cylinder tube. Then place the rear of the tube into the base at the rear sight. Turn the gas cylinder tube lock down to its locked position. Slide the bolt into the carrier and rotate the bolt to position the operating lug with its cam path. Pull the bolt forward as far as possible in the carrier. Slide the piston into the hole under the rear sight until the bolt carrier fits into the cuts at the rear of the receiver. With the bolt in its forward position, press the bolt carrier down and slide the carrier. Reseat the guide into its slot in the receiver Place the front of the bolt cover into the circular grooves in the rear sight base . Bring the rear of the bolt cover over the driving spring guide. Apply pressure down and forward until the driving spring guide snaps through the square hole of the bolt cover. **10-MINUTE BREAK ** MP 4: AK-47 Fundamentals:

Sight Picture: The relationship between your eyes, the sights, and the target. Aim for the center mass of the available target. Focus should be on the front sight.

Trigger Control: Manipulate safety to desired firing position (we will use semi position). Move your finger to the trigger. Use the fat/meaty part of your finger on the trigger (that is the area half way between the tip of your finger and the first joint/ crease of the finger). Use controlled fire (squeeze the trigger to the rear, hold briefly and release). Listen for the trigger re-set. This is known as follow-through. Fire all remaining shots in the same manner.

Breathing: Firstactually do it (explain natural respiratory pause). Sight-in shootingshoot at the natural respiratory pause. During tactical shootingenough said During exertion, minimize through short shallow breaths Note: Fitness in the key.

Follow-through: After the shot, allow the weapon to follow its natural arc and re-settle onto the target (where it settles is your natural point of aim). **Explain the difference between the natural and adjusted point of aim** Dont fight the weapon. Allow technique to do its job. Continue to apply all fundamentals.
