1. Suppose that the electric potential outside a living cell is higher than that inside the
cell by 0.076 V. How much work is done by the electric force when a sodium ion
(charge = +e) moves from the outside to the inside?
The question says the electric potential. The electric potential is the same thing as
saying ΔV (measured in volts). If you read the chapter in page 560 it says that:
ΔV = -WAB / qo
The charge that it talks about is about a positive electron, which is different than a
negative electron but they have the same charge:
1.6 ×10-19 C
Since you have the change in electric potential, and the charge, you can solve for
work.
ΔV × qo = W
In this problem they give you the ΔV and the Work done by the electrons. The only
variable missing is the charge. Solve for the charge:
ΔV = W/q
ΔV × q = W
q = W / ΔV
3. A particle has a charge of 8.9 C and moves from point A to point B, a distance of
0.20 m. The particle experiences a constant electric force. The difference beteween
the particle's electric potential energy at A and B is EPEA - EPEB = 4.0 x 10-4 J. (a)
Find the magnitude and direction of the electric force that acts on the particle. (b)
Find the magnitude and direction of the electric field that the particle experiences.
(*Note: Its easy but I HATE THIS ONE, (Blue Angel.) For this one I had to call Purple
Squirrel and he told me how to do it in a couple of seconds.)
Keep in mind that work is measured in Joules. They give you Joules (EPEA—EPEB)
Also keep in mind that W = Fd (they also give you d)
W = Fd
W /d = F
The problem told you that the charge was moving from point A to point B…
Then it asked you to find the Electric field that the particle experiences.
Eq = F
E = F/ q
Again the problem told you the charge was going from point A to point B…
