ACOUSTIC THERMOMETER

POWER OF SOUND

ACOUSTIC THERMOMETRY

Measurement of temperature by measuring the speed of sound in a gas Acoustic thermometers function in environments that conventional sensors cannot tolerate

In gases, the velocity is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature

Q = flow of gas whose temperature is to be measured

1 = flowing gas 2 and 3 = microphones 4 and 5 = sound generators 6 = pipe 7 = object whose temperature is to be measured 8 = enveloped gas 9 = gas container 10 and 11 = feedback-loop amplifiers.

Until very recently, it had only been used for measuring cryogenic (very low) temperatures, but it is now also used for measuring higher temperatures and can potentially measure right up to 20 000C
