When is the best time to visit Bangkok? December - February are the best months to visit as it is relatively cool & usually dry. April is the hottest month & September the peak of the wet season. Floods are usual at the start of the wet season in May & in October when the water is at its highest. Upon clearing custom at the airport, head down one level to the airport public taxi stand. Ignore all touts in the airport terminal offering taxi services. Taxis vary from some older vehicles to very new ones & some van-type taxis ideal for 3-4 people with lots of bags. All taxis run on natural gas & most of the boot (trunk) is taken up with the NG tank. Then, went right up to the counter & tell the supervisor your destination. Show him the address of the hotel written in Thai which you had prepared beforehand. He will give you the all-important white colored piece of paper which stated clearly the particulars of the taxi & its drivers name. (When youre in the PINK taxi, it has a card displaying the details of the driver.) This white slip is strictly meant only for the passenger's own keepsake & reference, in case of any disputes that may arise later. The driver will not have any business at all in wanting this slip from you, as he will also be given another piece of paper directly from the counter man, detailing where the passenger wants to go. Just to be cautious & prevent any misunderstanding later. When you get into the taxi, make sure the meter is on and showing 35. On arrival at your hotel, youll have to pay the fare on the meter, plus an airport surcharge of 50 that is not shown on the meter. In addition there are expressway tolls of 70 for most city centre destinations. Typical cost: 250-400 depending on distance, average seems to be around 300-350. Average Time: About 30-45mins depending on distance & traffic/road conditions. If you plan to take a metered taxi, ask for small notes when you exchange currency. The exchange booths are familiar with this request, will comply willingly. A reasonable supply of 100 notes would be best. Many taxi drivers either do not have small change, or will tell you they don't hoping you will let them keep a large note/bill to avoid a problem or delay. There are exchange booths scattered throughout the airport-- most are open 24/7 regardless of day. There is even one in the baggage reclaim/Customs Hall area- immediately after passport control. You can easily attend to your money matters while you wait for your bags.

Mobile numbers in Thailand will always start with 08 (ie 08-xxxx-xxxx). If youre expecting a call or text messaging you from abroad, dont forget to have them remove 0 & then add +66 for the Thailand country code (+668-xxxx-xxxx) Incoming calls are free, so people back home can call you & it won't cost you anything. For calling home, dial "004" before the country code instead of using +. So to call the Singapore, dial 004-area code/number, & it costs about 4/min (As opposed to about 10/min if you don't use the 004 code). Can buy BTS Sky SmartPass @ any BTS Stations (MRT) 1. Patpong Night Market [6pm 1am] Found in the built-up area known as Silom, the place is always busy & chaotic with all the commotion from the GO-GO bars nearby & lots of foreign tourists. This market in Bangkok's notorious nightlife district is often the first and easiest stop for many tourists just arriving to Bangkok. Be warned though, the quality & prices of most items sold are about as real & trustworthy as the girls shaking their wares in go-go bars flanking the area. Tuk-Tuk: Agree on the price before you hop in. Shouldn't be over 100 & make it clear you want to go direct. Look out for blue short sleeves uniform. Theyre more honest. Ignore people who approach you. Simply smile politely & walk away or pretend that you don't understand English. Never believe them for they wanna trick tourists to certain places where they get commission for bringing people there. The items on sale are usually gems & jewellery at these places are of questionable quality at atrocious prices. Never ever say something bad about the Royal Family or the Thai democracy, not only will the Thais be extremely offended by it but insulting the king is a crime & also be reminded that throwing things is considered rude, especially banknotes since they have a picture of the King on them! Taxi: Ignore & head right to the sign saying "Public Taxis". Do not wear red or yellow Register yourself with Singapore embassy for Thailand Buy your travel insurance. Please bring as few items as you possibly can (If possible, empty) & also a big bag as you can buy things over there & of cos, you wouldnt want your luggage to get extra kilos when you come back. http://cheapeatsbangkok.com/photos/thai/tat_scams.jpg http://www.bangkokscams.com/ Useful Tips For 1st Time Taxi Hailers 1. Try & at least familiarize yourself of the direction of where is where, so that youre able to take a cab from the correct side of the road. In Bangkok where the traffic jam can be horrendous & vehicles move at a snail pace, taking a cab which requires it to make a U-turn may be turned down by the driver, not to mention the fact that it will definitely increased your cab fare by a huge margin too. 2. Dont just hop into the cab. Open the front passenger door 1st (If the window is not lowered, that is), leaned into it & tell the driver where you want to go. If he nods his head then get in. I had seen even the locals do that. Watch that he turns on the meter (Chances are that he will), if he doesnt, just tell him to do so nicely & gently. 3. To avoid any embarrassing situations when it comes to paying the fares, ALWAYS carry plenty small changes with you in the forms of 20 & coins in 10 & even 5. After the initial flag-up rate of 35 for the first 1km, the subsequent jumps on the meter is 2 each time (Depending on the total distance traveled). Your fare will probably not end up in a nice 10 denominations. The payment can be just

rounded off to the next nearest 10. So say, if your fare on the meter shows 64, you can pay him 70 - The balance taken as a small tip. 70 = One 50 note & one 20 note, OR 3 20 notes & 1 10 coin. 4. If you dont have these small notes & coins with you, & just give him a 100 notes. Well, he may think youre giving him tips & just keep the change. If you are hanging around in the rear seat, waiting for your change, things could be a little bit awkward. To prevent this unnecessary 'complication', always break your bigger notes to small ones & coins, whenever you buy things from a shop. Even if its just a small bottle of mineral water costing 10. Keeps lots of small change with you so that youre able to pay the taxi driver exactly how much you wanted to, without the need for him to make change. 5. Even if you are unfortunate not to have small change at that time, bear in mind at all times how much actually 10, 20 or even 50 is, as compared to your own currency. Its just a couple of cents to a dollar is all. Just let it go, rather than kick up a big fuss over it & ruining the mood of your own holiday. Things To Buy:-
