Topic: Procedures Literacy Class: 1F

Lesson #1 Date: Monday 1/11/10

4.1.1 Communicate clear directions to students about learning goals.

Rationale: Students will gain further information on Procedures by watching a video on how to make an Origami boat and then having to write down the steps involved. Outcomes and Indicators: WS1.10 Produces texts using the basic grammatical features and punctuation conventions of the text type. usually uses capital letters at the beginning of sentences usually uses full stops at the end of sentences experiments with other punctuation marks, eg commas, quotation marks, question marks. UT S1.9 Selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources to undertake an investigation or design task.
Time

Effective communication of goals and expectations is imperative as students need clear directions to achieve the outcomes for the lesson. The use of ICT was important in this lesson as it related closely to a previous experience that happened the day before. The clasroom teacher had a flat tyre and she took the class out to look at the equipment needed. This rich experience opened an opportunity to explicitly teach procedures. The students also had the You tube video to reinforce the learning.

Introduction (Set): Discuss today's lesson and what we are planning to do, (punctuation) list the lesson sequences on the IWB. Revisit the previous lesson on How to change a tyre. Question the students on -Why did the man in the video give us instructions on how to change a tyre? -Why did he do the steps in order? -What tools were needed before he started? -What instructions did he give us on safety? -Why? All Procedures give us instructions on how to do or make something. Main Content: Explain to the class that we are going to make a paper boat called an origami boat but to be able to make the boat we need to get some instructions. Watch the you tube video and talk about the instructions that we watched. On the smart board, write down as many instructions as the children can remember. Watch the movie again and in groups the children will write down the instructions. Rewrite the Procedure in their workbooks.

10 mins

Teaching Approaches Use questioning to determine if the children can recall the information from the previous transport lessons.

4.1.2 Demonstrate a range of questioning techniques designed to support student learning.

Time

Teaching Approaches Questioning Higher order thinking by asking the children open ended questions. Allowing the children to have a hands on approach to learning.

35 mins

Questioning needs to be effective and open ended to encourage discussions and higher order thinking skill development. The questioning techniques in this lesson were planned to encourage the students to think about the procedure they were watching and be able to talk about an activity that may be new to them. Their responses were written on the board to show a visual representation for the kinaesthetic land ESL learners. Questioning is a technique that helps the teacher determine whether the lesson was effective and if the students understood the concepts. 4.1.4 Use student group structures as appropriate to address teaching and learning goals. According to Vygotsky, more knowledgeable children play important roles in other children's thinking and learning. Therefore the students in this lesson were grouped according to mixed abilities so peers could learn from each other. The less-able students will have a positive role model and the more able students reinforce their own knowledge when they explain it to others. 4.1.5 Use a range of teaching strategies and resources including ICT and other technologies to foster interest and support learning.

RESOURCES Website: http://www.origami-instructions.com/origami-boat.html You tube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXgm8XvBqL0 IWB, Computer, access to internet, papers for origami boat,

These range of strategies were used to deepen the students knowledge on the topic being taught and to foster an interest of learning. Integrating ICT gives students the resource to see the subject in the real world and make the connections to their own life. This was shown in the Volcanoes website that was used as a web quest. Technologies used were the IWB, internet, you tube videos which was used in the Stage 1 class for changing a tyre.
