f there is such a thing as a holy grail in the field of
education, then finding the perfect assessment would be it.
Educators are constantly searching for the most effective way to measure student learning. f done correctly, assessments can provide the instructor with a plethora of essential information. Did students meet the desired learning objective? Will they retain the information? Can they transfer the knowledge gained? These are all questions an effectively designed assessment can answer. There are a wide variety of assessment tools and techniques currently available to the online instructor. So much, as a matter of fact, that it would be nearly impossible for one instructor to utilize all of them. And there are more being created every day. n light of this, a collaborative review of selected assessments tools becomes an invaluable resource for educators. Our team has selected three tools for you to consider in your quest for the perfect assessment. Each review includes an introduction, list of benefits and challenges, an application example, and possible learning objectives that could be used. We hope our efforts help you to better understand a few of the assessment options available. VisuaI thinking Assessment & Graphic Map Software - Glogster EDU Contribution by Amy Chenoweth O logster EDU allows students to create interactive, multi-media posters (glogs) in an online format. Students can use text, photos, videos, graphics, sounds, drawings, and data attachments to create highly engaging glogs which showcase their understanding of a particular subject. Teachers can easily monitor student progress and have the option of creating assessments either as individual or collaborative projects. Students create, store, and share their glogs at the logster EDU website. There are four different types of accounts. The free version is only for individual use and does not allow teachers to create or monitor student accounts. The other three accounts range from teacher to school level, priced accordingly. Next enefits of Glogster O logster EDU provides teachers with the means to assess student comprehension while engaging them in a fun and creative activity. Students are encouraged to express their individuality while becoming independent thinkers and problem solvers. n addition, logster EDU allows students to increase their digital literacy skills while working in a safe environment. However, in my opinion, the biggest benefit of logster EDU is that it provides a powerful tool for authentic assessment. O Not only does logster EDU allow teachers to monitor student progress and easily view completed projects, it also provides the means with which to share these projects using the system's presentation capabilities. This can be done on many different levels ranging from classroom to district and beyond. eaknesses of Glogster O believe there are two main weaknesses with logster EDU. The first of these weaknesses would be the cost. A teacher can't do much class management with the free version, so they would have to subscribe to the next level which is $29.95/yr. However, the Teacher Premium level is really the best of the bunch and that runs at $100/yr. While the prices aren't unreasonable, if a teacher is paying out of pocket, it does make a difference. O The second weakness is that there may just be too many media options for students to choose from. The logster EDU graphics library alone has 82 pages, and you can upload your own as well. t seems the assessment itself could become secondary to finding just the right graphic, video, sound, etc. For many students who have difficulty focusing when presented with too many options, this could be a real issue. Next Application of Glogster ou can take practically any topic and apply it to logster EDU. t is especially useful when using research activities for assessment purposes. The format is perfect for displaying knowledge gained about people, events, places, and things. Students are encouraged to gain an in-depth understanding of a subject in order to present only its' most important points. Learning Objective The student will research a historical figure from the Revolutionary War and create a glog with 90% accuracy according to the provided rubric. http://rohowizagon.edu.glogster.com/amazon-rainforest/ "uiz & Test BuiIder - Exam uilder Contribution by Greg Lunsford ExamBuilder is a innovative test building software that joins authoring and delivery into one east to use interface. t offers real-time scoring results and certifications; it can instantly identify training gaps, improve course material, make long-term behavioral change and establish Return On nvestment (RO). ExamBuilder can also convey value to an organization's business leaders, trainers, and employees. By identifying areas of strengths and weaknesses it gives visibility into what can be done to improve performance. The cloud-base platform allows training departments to access testing more quickly, prove the practicality of training, save time and lower costs. This will in turn provide employees instant testing feedback which will provide better training results, immediate certification credentials and elevated approval in training programs. Next enefits of Examuilder O Exam builder is fairly simple to get started using and the free trial period allows those that are interested in Exam Builder to test the product before buying. There is no software to down load so one can get started working immediately after creating an account. O Exam Builder offers five questions to choose from Multiple Choice, Fill-in-the-Blank, True/False, Multiple Select, and Matching. Questions are easy to create and users have the ability to add photos to their questions to help add creativity and references. Question can be added to the Question Pool so the instructor can use them from one quiz to another. O Offers LMS integration at the Executive Edition level which is perfect for institutions and companies that take advantage of online education or training. eaknesses of Examuilder O First thing that noticed was the lack of implementing essay style questions. Which feel is an essential assessment tool in high education. The only questions available are more standardized models. O Secondly, since the program is reliant upon being online if the instructor loses online capabilities for any reason it ultimately stalls production; which in online classes can cause major issues for everyone. O Another thing noticed is that you are basically leasing the software and the more users you have the more expensive it becomes and they only offer two plans; Standard Edition: $10.75 per user per year and Enterprise Edition: $15.95 per user per year. With a starter package of 50 licenses making the Standard Edition $695 and Enterprise Edition $865 and if you compare that to software that you can buy and own out right is fairly expensive. Next Application of Exam uilder nstructors can create simple quizzes quickly and post them online without the need of additional software. Simply register students to quiz, test, or exam by entering in name and student D information and they can login and take the test. nstant certification allows users to become immediately certified upon successful completion of exams Learning Objective At the end of this lesson, you will be able to compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of using standardized testing vs authentic assessment. Participants can collaborate through shared space such as the Vyew via computer or mobile device. Current trends in education indicate that sharing of information/collaboration should be part of every classroom. What is so nice about the using Vyew, is that collaboration can occur between people in different locations. Each person uses a browser to access the Vyew allowing for the collaboration to take place in real- time. Files and documents can be viewed, organized and managed by any person who has rights to the shared files. The abilities for live conferences seem easy to use, there are voice over options as well as webcam options. For assessment purposes, it is great because you can see who has contributed, when they contributed and what they did every step of the assignment. Next !eer to !eer, Instructor to Instructor- 'yew Contribution by Theresa Savich enefits of 'yew O The Vyew is a visual collaboration anytime, there isn't software to down -load, and it's free. Files and documents can be viewed, organized and managed by any person who has rights to the shared files. The abilities for live conferencing seems easy to use, there are options for voice over, webcam, discussions, and private chats. For assessment purposes, it is great because you can see who has contributed, when they contributed and what they did every step of the assignment. roup members can import files from Microsoft Office, use Jpg, RTF, Video, and MP3. Screen capture is built in as well as the option to publish a meeting or conference via URL. eaknesses of 'yew O The weakness of the Vyew is that found while on this assignment was that was unable to copy and paste documents. t was also difficult to use editing tools. Next AppIications for Vyew are that collaboration can take place at any time anywhere so assignments can be completed no matter your location. Students can present group projects, lessons can be taught showing each step of the process using screen capture and if a student makes a mistake, it can be edited right on the spot. Tutorial sessions for students that cannot grasp material during class could open up files with the step by step directions at any time or you can use other students who can take turns being experts and give help as needed. t can be used to interact with homebound students and with others around the world. ou can have author visits, fieldtrips without ever leaving your classroom/living room. Papers/projects can be assessed immediately as well as feedback given. Learning Objective O Students will engage in effective group problem solving skills according to rubric when collaborating on group project in Vyew. O Assessment can be a very difficult task if the product is something other than a quiz or multiple-choice test. Just as teachers should differentiate work for their students, the assessment tools should be different as well. There are a myriad of assessment tools that are currently available to teachers. This makes it difficult to find the most effective tool that will provide the best feedback. When searching for the right assessment tool, you will find that most have strengths and weaknesses as well as certain functions that will give your students the best objective feedback necessary for their learning. This presentation offers a glimpse into three assessment tools ; logsterEdu, ExamBuilder, and Vyew to assist teachers in finding the tool to better understand student needs.
