Circuit diagram:
Theory:
Energy meter testing by this experiment is performed by actual loading to the
meter. Different variables loads (resistive, inductive, capacitive) are connected in series
or parallel. At the rated voltage the rotations of meter can be visually checked whether it
is running or not by applying resistive, inductive or capacitive load. For the measurement
of power factor, a pf meter can be used. In case pf meter is not available, then this(fig)
arrangement of voltmeter, ammeter and wattmeter can be made to calculate the power
factor.

Procedure:
• Connect the circuit as shown in the figure.
• Keeping the voltage constant for a particular load power factor has to be
measured.
• Power, current and voltage value have to be noted from the meters for different
loads.

Tabulation:

Calculation:
cosØ =[wattmeter reading/(voltage*current)]

Conclusion:
Single phase energy meters are used for measuring the active power
only. By performing this experiment it can be concluded whether the meter is rotating for
unity, lagging and leading power factor.
