Program Competency: Interdisciplinary Curriculum

Rationale
One oI the most important components oI a classroom Iilled with a community oI
learners is creating instruction that not only keeps the students engaged, but is also Iun and
memorable. By creating instruction that contains interdisciplinary curriculum, teachers can
educate students in multiple content areas eIIectively and can make learning unIorgettable. I
chose the lesson 'How Scientists Use Tools, to demonstrate my understanding oI this type oI
teaching.
Reflection
For my lesson, I set up several stations with diIIerent measuring tools. At each station
there were directions as to what the students would be measuring. Each student was given a
packet to record the deIinition oI the unit oI measurement, the metric units, the tool being used,
the item being measured, their estimation oI the measurement, and the actual measurement.
There were 5 stations total including one Ior volume, mass, length, temperature, and time. The
overall objective was to have the students observe physical properties through measurement and
understand how scientists use these tools to measure during an experiment. This objective
included covering both the math and science Standards oI Learning as Iollows:
O ath 5.8 The student will:
4 Iind perimeter, area, and volume in standard units oI measure
4 identiIy equivalent measurements within the metric system
O Science 5.1 The student will plan and conduct investigations in which:
4 estimations oI length, mass, and volume are made
4 appropriate instruments are selected and used Ior making quantitative
observations oI length, mass, volume, and elapsed time
4 accurate measurements are made using basic tools (thermometer, meter stick,
balance, graduated cylinder)
During the lesson, the students were very engaged and seemed to understand the content
Iurther with the hands-on learning experience. I was able to cover both math and science in this
interdisciplinary curriculum. The Ieedback Irom the students aIter the lesson was taught was
positive and they seemed to do well as I graded their science packets.
y Iaith impacted this lesson as well. It says in Deuteronomy 32:2, 'Let my teaching
Iall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on
tender plants. Having a positive inIluence on my student`s lives is one oI the most important
things I strive Ior. By achieving teaching a lesson that keeps my students engaged while
teaching them important content, I am Iollowing God`s word and doing God`s work.
