Abstract

Optimum used of natural resources one of the most important elements of

independency and economic development of a country, particularly the optimum
usage of water resources should be more considered. According to the past studies
it can be concluded that the whole volume of the precipitation in a year is about 450
billion m3 of which is about 325 billion m3 is wasted as uncontrolled and damageable
water (streams). The flood control and conducting it toward suitable areas, both, as
ground water recharge aspect and also as control the damaging force of it, can be
considered as an research area. Flood spreading is an inexpensive method for flood
mitigation and artificial recharge of aquifers that results in a large budget return for
relatively small investment. It is necessary to study some regional characteristics in
order to determine the appropriate areas for artificial groundwater recharge by flood
spreading in Ghorchay Basin, Golestan Province, Iran. Necessary regional
characteristics to be studied are: slope, infiltration rate and sediment thickness. This
research is to identify suitable areas for artificial recharge several thematic layers
were prepared, assigning each layer to one of the mentioned characteristics. All of
the classes of the thematic layers were integrated and analyzed using geographical
information system (GIS) environment and also for preparing the layers Remote
Sensing (RS). Finally suitability of the integrated classes for artificial recharge was
identified. The validity of the generated model was verified by applying the model to
a number of successful floodwater spreading stations throughout Iran. The results for
Ghorchay Basin showed that major of the Quaternary sediments in the studied area
are suitable for artificial recharge by flood spreading.
