Preparation of a Salt from its Elements Date: 2nd November 2007 Aim To prepare zinc iodide to its elements.

. Apparatus 8cm measuring cylinder, filter funnel, filter paper, test tubes, thermometer, spatula and watch glass. Method Using an 8cm measuring cylinder, ethanol was poured into a test tube. A spatula was used to measure a scoop of iodine which was then added into the test tube which was left to dissolve. After adding the iodine the temperature was recorded. Two scoops of zinc were then measured and also added to the test tube. The test tube was then stirred gently with the thermometer and both the lowest and highest temperature was recorded at this point during the reaction. The mixture was left to cool down and shortly after the filter paper was placed in the filter funnel and the liquid remaining in the test tube was then filtered into a second test tube. Then the test tube was washed out with tap water to get rid of any remaining ethanol. The filter paper and zinc remains were then removed and discarded. After this the liquid filtrate was then poured on to a watch glass which was on a heating plate and the ethanol was allowed to evaporate. Results Iodine & Ethanol were 25 degrees before adding the zinc and after adding the zinc the temperature increased up to 77 degrees at its highest point. Conclusion: - The experiment concludes that salts are formed between metals and none metals. This method was successful in forming zinc iodide it was prepared and a white crystalline solid was produced. In this experiment, the state of matter was charged of the alcholol by chemical reaction, physical process to separate mixtures = zinc iodide Zinc + Iodide = Zinc Iodide Zn + I2 = ZnI2 Metal + Non Metal = Salt Valencies of zinc is variable as it is a transition metal Iodine valency = 1
