COURSE FEATURES / POLICIES:

A. Students cannot interIere with the learning experiences oI others
B. Students must respect patient`s privacy and Iollow HIPAA regulations as directed in the
Campus Dental Clinic
C. Students must use universal precautions and Iollow OSHA standards
D. Students must Iollow clinic dress code
E. Students need to be present at orientation meeting at 7:20 AM. Students who are late or
miss the meeting will loose points Irom the day`s average
F. Students must attend the team`s review session aIter clinic
G. Students need to be proIessional and demonstrate positive work ethic
H. Students are to review clinic related materials as appropriate to be prepared Ior the rigors
oI the clinic experiences
I. During every Campus Dental Clinic rotation, the student must: participate and sign the
Team Log, complete selI evaluations take team leader directions; rotate as team leader;
accept and Iollow dentists and instructional technician`s directives; be motivated about
rotation.
J. Students may be dismissed (and Iail) Irom clinic iI: unprepared physically and / or
mentally; actions endanger patients, staII, peers saIety or welIare; is using or
demonstrates impaired Iunction due to drugs, alcohol, or other chemical substances,;
insubordination.
K. Students absent during clinic rotations will miss assigned points and they cannot be
made up. All points must average at least 76 to pass Dent 156.
L. When students have concerns about clinic, they must Iollow posited protocol to address
concerns.
M. Students needing more practice may sign up Ior review sessions with the instructional
technician, between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM by appointment only.
N. Students must Iollow the assigned schedule oI rotations into the Campus Dental Clinic
O. Students should review the program`s Policy and Procedural Manual and are expected to
adhere to policies stated.
P. BeIore students are allowed to rotate into the clinic, they must show prooI oI:
1. Current CPR and First Aid card
2. ProoI oI Hepatitis B vaccination
3. Copy oI current TB skin test results
4. ProoI oI malpractice insurance through the college
5. ProoI oI scrub Iee payment to the college


FINANCIAL AID:

Students receiving Iinancial aid should ALWAYS check with Financial Aid prior to withdrawing, signing an
incomplete contract, or receiving an F or V.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS AND EXPECTATIONS:

Learning experiences are designed to achieve course objectives.

This is a lab course. The rotations into the Campus Dental Clinic are designed to provide opportunities Ior the
student to practice skills taught summer and Iirst quarter and to observe patients receiving dental services.

Grades are based on earned points Irom the Iollowing activities:

A. Completion oI selI evaluations
B. Participation in the aIter clinic team meeting and signing the Team Log
C. Attendance
D. Following the dress code

All points earned will be averaged into a grade. Students must have a minimum oI 76 to continue on to second
quarter.

Students may have the opportunities to volunteer, as the need arises, once a quarter in the Campus Dental Clinic.
Students who volunteer will earn Iive extra points and can apply those points towards any course taught by Joan
Martin.

87-93 B
86-76 C
72-75 D
0-71 F

DENT 156 PRACTICAL LAB APPLICATION I
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students are assigned rotations in the Campus Dental Clinic where they observe and become involved in the
delivery oI dental services to patients Irom the community at large. Students will use basic skills as taught summer
and Iall quarters.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

Upon completion oI this course the successIul student will be able to;

A. Prepare the clinic treatment Iacility beIore daily patients arrive;
B. Prepare the treatment Iacility Ior the next day;
C. Work constructively with his/her assigned team;
D. Interpret and Iollow a daily clinic schedule;
E. Prepare all armamentarium Ior speciIic procedures to include: exam, recalls, restorative procedures,
prophylaxis;
F. PerIorm dental assisting skills to include: setting up and transIerring topical and local anesthetic, mixing
and transIerring oI materials, transIerring instruments, maintaining operator`s Iield, patient
management, ergonomics, processing instruments, taking blood pressure readings, managing patient
records, powering up and breaking down treatment rooms; use oI PPE`s, review oI health histories;
G. Clear water lines Ior handpieces and 3-way;
H. Set up contained water supply in treatment rooms;
I. Use correct terminology;
J. Demonstrate proIessional attitude and demeanor with patients and staII;
K. Complete daily assessment oI clinical experiences and progress to include the use oI the Team Log, Self
Evaluations, and Overall Rating by the instructional staII.
