Using Coodinate Geometry with Quadrilaterals.

Reminder: Midpoint Formula

x1 + x2 y1 + y2 , 2 2

Slope Formula
m= y2 y1 x2 x1

Distance Formula
d=

( x2 x1 )

+ ( y 2 y1 )

Use these formulas to solve the following example. Example Given the quadrilateral ABCD on the Cartesian Coordinate Plane;
7

A ( 2,6 )
6 5

B ( 7, 7 )

-6

-4

-2

-1

-2

C ( 1, 2 )

D ( 4, 3 )

-3

(a) (b) (c)

(d)

Show that ABCD is a parallelogram. Show that ABCD is NOT a rhombus. Show that ABCD is NOT a rectangle. Given the midpoint of AC is E , 3 , what is the midpoint of BD ? 2
3

So, In order to prove that a quadrilateral is a specific type (i.e. this quadrilateral is a parallelogram) you MUST prove that the definition is true. In order to prove that a quadrilateral is NOT a specific type (i.e. this quadrilateral is NOT a rhombus) you can disprove ANY ONE of the properties.
