Study Guide for the Test (worth 20%) The format of the test will include multiple choice,

fill in the blank, matching, and true or false questions. In some cases, you will be asked to provide explanations for your responses. There will also be one long essay question (roughly 700 to 1000 words). You will be given three essay questions to prepare before the test. For the test itself you will be given two of these three essays and will then be asked to write an essay response for one essay of the two essays only. Who is Patanjali? 2. What are the Yoga Sutras? 3. In what style are the Yoga Sutras presented? In your response, make sure to discuss the concept of sutra, and the notion of oral transmission. 4. Explain the content in the Yoga Sutras, chapter 1.1-5. Provide examples, where applicable. 5. Essay Questions 1. Write an essay providing a comprehensive definition of the concept of yoga. Before beginning your essay, provide a clearly structured outline of your essay response. You will be expected to draw upon all of the relevant assigned readings for the test in your response. Summarize your response in a brief conclusion. You will be evaluated on the clarity and structure of your outline, the content and organization of your essay, and the skillful use and understanding of all relevant key terms. 2. Compare and constrast Desikachars translations (174-183) of Patanjalis verses on the yamas and niyamas with those Jois (course pack 169-173) and Iyengar (131-138). First, provide an outline of your essay. Then, provide a list with each of the yamas and niyamas, and their corresponding definitions according to each commentator. In your essay, define each of the yamas and niyamas and provide a clear, descriptive example of each one. Then, discuss the differences in tone, emphasis in meaning, and intended audience in Desikachar, Jois, and Iyengars translations. Summarize your response with a brief conclusion. You will be evaluated on the clarity and structure of your outline, the content and organization of your essay, and the skillful use and understanding of all relevant key terms. 3. Discuss the significance and function of pranayama in yoga practice. First, provide an outline of your essay. In your essay, incorporate an explanation of the meaning of prana, pranayama, the benefits of pranayama, apana, the different vayus, and the concept of agni. In your response, draw upon all the relevant sources (not just Desikachars Pranayama chapter) to synthesize a response to this question. You will be evaluated on the clarity and structure of your outline, the content and organization of your essay, and the skillful use and understanding of all relevant key terms.
