The Coming of Spain

Reasons for coming to the Philippines:


1. God – to spread Roman Catholicism
2. Gold – to become rich by controlling the spice trades
3. Glory – power, conquerors of nations

Lapu-Lapu – Philippine’s First hero, earned the title for killing Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan

Points of Interest:
1. Rio de Janeiro
2. Rio de Plata
3. Narrow Strait (Secret Passage), later called Magellan’s Strait
4. Pacific Ocean – from the word Pacifus w/c means Peaceful
5. Islas de Ladrones – Island of Thieves
6. Mindanao, Palawan, Cebu

**Only Victoria was able to go to Moluccas (Island east of Borneo)

7. Indian Ocean
8. Atlantic Ocean

Magellan’s Voyage:
1. He wanted to find the *Philippines but was not supported by Portugal.
2. King Ferdinand & Queen Isabela from Spain financed his expedition.
3. His aim is to reach the east through a “secret passage” (Magellan’s Strait) to the west.
4. How : a.) 20th of September the year 1517 – Magellan’s Fleet left Spain.
b.) They sailed southwestward down to the tip of South America.
c.) They crossed the “secret passage”
d.) They crossed northwestward across the Pacific Ocean
e.) 16th March the year 1521 – They Finally reached the Philippines (Mactan, Cebu)

The “Discovery of the Philippines:


Asian View – Philippines had established relationships with other Asian nations before the Spaniards came
European View – Philippines was “discovered”. Its purpose is to keep away other rival European Nations
(Portugal, England, France & Netherlands). The most powerful of them all was Spain and Portugal (who are
competing for new lands.)

Colonialism – the invasion of a smaller nation by a bigger power which leads to the control of economic & political
freedom of the smaller nation.
- also called “imperialism”

Rivalry between Portugal and Spain


- 16th Century (1500’s) – Portugal and Spain were rivals for colonies.
- 1493 – Pope Alexander VI issued a bill dividing the world between Spain & Portugal.
- 1494 – Spain & Portugal signed he treaty of Tordesillas shifting the demarcation line made by the
Pope.
