I Love to expLore the WorLd

SImon morLeyBeach Gm holiday Inn resort mai Khao

1.Can you tell us about your background please?
I have worked in the hospitality industry for a little over 20 years. Early in my career I worked in various hotels and night clubs in Hawaii, Guam, and Australia, then in 2001 I joined InterContinental Hotel Group as a Front Office Manager at InterContinental Resort Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. A few years later I transferred as Revenue Manager of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Dubai. Since then, I have moved across regions, working in Melbourne, Australia as a Cluster Revenue Manager, and in Seoul, South Korea, joining Grand InterContinental Hotel Seoul as an Executive Assistant Manager. After which, I returned to the Middle East region as a Resident Manager at Al Bustan Palace InterContinental Muscat, Oman. Prior to working in my current position, I was the General Manager at Holiday Inn Clark, Pampanga, Philippines. Today I am very fortunate and proud to be the General Manager at Holiday Inn Resort Phuket Mai Khao Beach where I have just celebrated my 10th anniversary with IHG and opened this fabulous resort on September 9th. 2. What is your educational background? I graduated from the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, USA with a Bachelors Degree in Hotel Management. 3.Why did you decide to join the hotel and tourism sector? The reason for this was due to my enjoyment of travel and working with people. Most hotel and tourism sectors have to be managed by people not machines. Everyday is different; it is a challenge for me to learn and service different people every day from all over the world and to work with very exciting team members. In addition, I love to explore the world and consider myself very nomadic, therefore working in international hotels matches with my personality. Thats why I love it and have worked in this industry for over 20 years. 4.Can you tell us about the new resort here in Mai Khao? Holiday Inn Resort Phuket, Mai Khao Beach is a midscale international brand hotel along the northwest coast of Phuket. The 246 room, new-build property caters to all types of travelers -- from couples on a romantic getaway to families seeking the perfect holiday, or even professionals on a corporate retreat. The resorts rooms each feature the latest in hospitality technology such as LCD flat-screen TVs connected to DVD players and I-pod docking stations.

16

The property also offers free wireless Internet in the rooms and throughout the resort; while i-Pads are available for guests use. In addition, the resort has a range of family-friendly facilities and services such as KidSuites, Family Suite, Teen Zone and Kids Club. The brands signature Kids Stay and Eat Free feature makes family vacations truly enjoyable and affordable. This programme allows up to two children under 18 years old to stay free when sharing a room with up to two adults. Children under 12 enjoy complimentary breakfast; and free lunch and dinner from the childrens menu when accompanied by an adult who takes at least one main course. In addition, we are located less than 10km from the airport and only a short travel time to other tourist beaches.

5.How will you promote the new resort? We would like to promote this resort as a resort that caters to all types of travelers from couples on a romantic getaway to families seeking the perfect holiday, or even professionals on a corporate retreat. We have promoted through various channels both online and off-line. Being a hotel under InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and the Holiday Inn brand are advantageous and a strength for being the worlds largest hotel group by number of rooms and the most widely recognised hotel brand in the world. In addition, we have built good relationship with both leading hotel wholesalers and retailers and have been attending many road shows in order to create awareness of the new resort and generate more bookings.

6. How do you compete with other resorts that are already established within the area?
Our resort is different from other resorts within Mai Khao, Phuket. By having Holiday Inn heritage, the resort has a range of family-friendly facilities and services such as KidSuites, Family Suite, Teen Zone, Kids Club, with an array of entertaining activities where younger kids can have fun under the watch of professional care takers. Our hotel services and operations are specifically designed with conservation of natural resources in mind. We have an efficient water-recycling system and an

intuitive energy-saving system. There are no motorised vehicles in the resort, which helps maintain clean air and quiet surroundings, and provides our guests with a truly relaxing environment. Additionally, we believe in Holiday Inn Stay Real service culture, allowing guests to be as comfortable and relaxed as they can be, so they can Stay You, which is new refreshed brand of Holiday Inn Group and be themselves no matter who they are. All of these mean we differentiate our service not only a range of family-friendly facilities, conservation of natural resources in mind but also believe in our Holiday Inn service culture that reflects to all service provide to our guests.

in a resort and need to spend considerable time in the resort both with the guests and the team.

9. What is the most/least enjoyable aspect of your job?

The most enjoyable aspect of my job is the complete satisfaction of hearing guests tell me about their great experience in the resort and most of all their praise for the team. To hear a guest talking about how a team member treated them and how they will go home and tell all their friends and family about the resort is so satisfying. Very difficult to say what is least enjoyable, but I guess I would have to say the long hours keeps me away more than I like from my wife and children. Working in resorts in not 9 to 5, so this is a sacrifice you have to make, but make the most of the time you do have.

7.How do you go about recruiting the necessary staff for the new resort?
Recruiting the right team is very important, but being in Thailand ticks the first box because hospitality is in the heart of Thais. Having the hospitality spirit is something that cannot be trained so I am very thankful that I have this as a base. Next we are looking for team members with energy and enthusiasm and who care, not only for guests, but their fellow team members too. Then we are looking for people who want to grow, want to be developed and are looking forward to the experience of opening a new resort!

10.What is your main aim for the resort upon its opening?
We look forward to welcoming our new guests from all over the world to our wonderful resort and let them experience the many services and facilities we have to offer. We will continue our strong training and development programs for our team members and establish long lasting community and environmental programs.

8.in your opinion, what makes a good resort GM?

Working in a resort poses a lot of additional challenges because the guests are often coming here for an experience not just for themselves but their families. They are trying to escape from their work, the daily routine and come to a place where they can let go, relax, and be taken care off. This requires a lot of attention to detail by the resort team and I work closely with them to ensure all touch points for the guest are covered. You cannot sit in your office all day

The True Taste of Thailand

Many restaurants here in Phuket boast about their authentic Thai cuisine. Straits dining is not indifferent, but here we can guarantee that you will be served some the best authentic Thai dishes there are to sampled whilst in The Pearl of the Andaman. Straits dining is the flagship restaurant of the Millennium Hotel, which is located behind Jungceylon Shopping Centre in the main tourist area Patong. The restaurant is furnished in a modern contemporary style and features typical Thai style decoration. The well laid out menu is split into the four regions from which the featured dishes originate; Northern, North Eastern, Central & Southern. Each dish is named in English-Thai and a clear description of each dish is provided. If diners are unsure what to choose or are not too sure about a specific dish the well trained and pleasant staff are always happy to lend a helping hand. Below is a selection of dishes we were lucky enough to try on our visit. Im not going to describe the taste of each individual dish as I want you to go and try for yourself. All I will tell you is these are some of the most amazing authentic Thai dishes I have experienced in my time in Thailand, and they really do allow you to experience the true taste of Thailand. Amazing!

He originally trained as and became a chef. However after one and a half years in the kitchen he could not see his creative side being suited to designing food. He believed that his expertise was actually in management and therefore decided to change his studies

and joined a hotel management school in his homeland. During his five years of studying hotel management he was also required to do periods of internship, which took him to various locations around the world. It was on one of those internships, in Thailand, where he first met his now Manager and friend, Urs Aebi. After gaining his Diploma, it was Pascals idea to return to South East Asia to seek employment. However, due to political instability at that time he decided to stay in his home country where he took up a position as Business Manager of an upscale restaurant/bar in Switzerland largest city, Zurich. He kept this position for nearly 3 years. Late last year Pascal received a call from Serenity Resort & Residences Manager Urs, who told him there was a position available that he really wanted

Blue Elephant is a total sensory concept

Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant is located at the site of the well-known Phra Pitak Chinpracha Mansion. The old mansion was built in 1903, in the reign of King Rama V. In the past, it was used as the governors residence. The stunning building is a combination of European and Chinese style architecture (Sino-Portuguese), while it is decorated in traditional Chinese style. A well is situated in the middle of the mansion, along with a large ventilator above it on the rooftop called a Shim Jae, which is a part of feng-shui science. Above the door, is a wooden sign with Chinese letters that reads Lean Bee meaning Lotus. This is in commemoration of the hardship & struggle of ancestors. The house faces south, enabling air to flow through and this reflects the wisdom & expertise of the architect. In recent years Phra Pitak Chinpracha was taken on by the Blue Elephant restaurant chain. The crumbling 100-year-old, 20-room mansion had been empty for decades. The international Thai restaurant chain, established in London in 1986, allocated $2m to renovate the mansion. Today, walking into the Blue Elephant restaurant will dazzle your senses. Blue Elephant is a total sensory concept based on the very best of traditional Thai beauty, charm, and courtesy.

Returning to the yacht, youll find the crew ready to serve up a superb lunch with fresh Andaman Sea seafood, perfectly roasted carvings and mature cheeses, all provided by the well-regarded Twinpalms Phuket resort catering team. Then its off to the serene, jungle-clad Rang Yai island where the tender is fired up and ready to give you an exciting round or two of water skiing, wakeboarding or doughnut-riding. Those who wish to enjoy the afternoon at a more languid pace may relax on the islands soft sands or remain on board. Then its a leisurely journey back to Phukets east coast, with plenty of time to enjoy more music, drinks and the balmy tropical breezes before returning to the marina. The M/Y Olympia can comfortably accommodate up to 20 guests, with a usual number of six to eight joining the day cruise. The cruise is operated by Twinpalms Group, a Phuket resort and hospitality operator that is highly acclaimed for its innovative style and service. I am not usually a boat person but was recommended the day by a couple of people who had been on the cruise. It exceeded my expectations with friendly and professional crew, lovely fellow cruisers and beautiful weather. Lots of fun island hopping and water sports. All in all a really great day Great experience, kids love the trip. Will definitely tell everyone about it. Great crew, very helpful and friendly. Asias Sexiest Luxury Cruise ...We had an awesome time with the M/Y Olympia. 7 star service, impeccable food, great scenery and fantastic activities. I have tried over a dozen of cruises and yacht trips in Phuket, and the Olympia is definitely the BEST cruise! A wonderful way to explore and discover the heavenly islands of Phuket and highly recommended to couples, friends and families! The whole day was truly lovely. The staff, lunch and the beautiful boat where a delight to experience. The girls where very knowledgeable and informative and we did not want for anything all day. We are having a wedding In Phuket next year and will look into hiring this boat and crew for the day for another amazing experience such as we had today. I would highly recommend this day to anyone. The cruise on MY Olympia was certainly one of the highlights of our trip. The yacht was immaculate and the service was second to none. The islands were beautiful, food was delicious and the water sports were lots of fun. If you come to Phuket then you have to take a day to experience this!

Kayaking
Kayaking in the areas surrounding Phuket is a once in a lifetime experience. Take the opportunity to explore either in a traditional kayak or a purposedesigned inflatable canoe and you will be captivated by a world you never knew existed. The canoes will take you through a mesmerizing maze of almost surreal crystalline limestone caves which are known in the local language as hongs - a myriad of caves, tunnels and interior lagoons.

Phuket Cable Ski

There is one water sport you can do away from the beaches here on Phuket. Phuket Cable Ski is the only Wake Park in Phuket and it is here that you can enjoy one of the most fun and challenging activities youre likely to find on the island. At Phuket Cable Ski you can be towed around a 410 meters long, 110 meters wide course at a speed of 28 -58 kilometers per hour, depending on your experience. Its ideal for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Diving and Snorkeling

In Phuket snorkelling and diving have become synonymous with each other. The ocean surrounding Phuket with its warm waters, clear visibility, and untold varieties of marine life, all help explain why Phuket is one of the top diving destinations in the world. Most beaches in Phuket are perfect for snorkelling. However, the months of October to April are best for visibility as the sea is at its calmest. Diving is Phukets number one tourism-based industry, and the dive tour operators are literally situated around every corner.

Phuket Trekking
If youre looking to try something different whilst youre here in Phuket, try a trek through its tropical rain forest and beautiful countryside. If you travel to the North of Phuket you will find Khao Phra Thaeo National Park. The park covers an area of approximately 22 sq kms and is Phukets last area of virgin rainforest and is home to protected species of wild animals. The national park has several forest trails for hiking and guides can be hired from the reserve office.

If you love the flavour of Thai food, and want to be able to cook the same food, by spending a couple of hours at a Thai Cooking Classes in Phuket you will be able to cook up a delicious Thai meal for your family and friends. Many of the hotels and especially the large luxury resorts offer in-house classes but if the style or format does not suit there are plenty of private classes to choose from. If you wish to try any of our suggestions or are interested in other tours or activities please visit the tour desk in your resort or one of the many tour operators who can be found all over the island.

Elephant Trekking Tour

One of the most enjoyable activities to do whilst visiting Phuket is an elephant trekking tour. It is probably the favourite activity among both foreign and Thai visitors. You will have an opportunity to ride a domesticated and gentle elephant through the untouched Phuket jungle. At the elephant camp, during the tour, you will have an opportunity to enjoy an elephant show which includes watching them play football, dancing and painting. You will also be able to take them to bath in a stream.

Yantra Tattoo
@ Sukko Spa
In many cultures around the world, tattoos are used as a way to signify status positions and are believed to offer supernatural protection. Sacred tattoos in Thailand are very popular, in particular Yantra tattoos.
Yantra tattoos are believed to be magic and bestow mystical powers, protection or good luck. Some claim that the tattoo can protect a person from physical harms and illnesses as long as they follow certain rules. Yantra tattoos are very popular among Muay Thai fighters and military people. Members of the Phuketindex team recently visited Yantra Tattoo at Sukko Spa to speak with the tattoo artist Khun Chad to find out more about this ancient practice.

Chan Ditkajan (Pong) Tattoo Artist Yantra Tattoo Sukko Spa

How did you become interested in Yantra tattoos?
I liked and became interested in Yantra tattoos at a very early age and decided that I wanted to learn more about them. Therefore, I gave myself the task of finding someone who could teach me about becoming a Yantra tattoo artist. My first teacher was Luang Por Boonsong from Wat Yangsoong in Suphan Buri. He is very well known within the Yantra tattoo society as his work is so skillful. After learning from him I became a Yantra tattoo artist and that was about 6 years ago.

What is the tattoo equipment of the past?

Yantra Tattooing is a form of sacred tattooing commonly practised in Thailand. The tattoos are associated with animist beliefs which were popular in Thailand before the arrival of Buddhism. Yantra dates back to Angkor times and the art is greatly influenced by Khmer culture. In fact the blessings are written in a Khmer script called Khom. Yantra designs are normally tattooed by Maw Pii or spiritual doctors and Buddhist monks. Originally, what is now a needle was a thorn which was from the material rattan. Nowadays the needle is made from stainless steel and is called a Kem Jeeb (pleat needle). What was originally used as ink was actually soot. This was very hard to produce and the technique used for making it was very intricate and meticulous.

from physical harm and illnesses as long as they follow the five conditions I mentioned before.

Disciple (Yantra Tattoo Fan)

How many tattoos do you have? Could they help with any issues in your life?
I have many tattoos because I like them a lot. However, I cannot tell you exactly how many I have now. I also believe that they will assist me in my job which is related to rescue. Most of my tattoos are about immunity and mercy.

When and where did you have your first tattoo?

I actually had two tattoos on my first visit. The first was the Kao Yod (nine peaks tattoo), and this tattoo brings me power and protection. The second is the Paed Tidt (eight direction tattoo). This tattoo gives me protection in whichever direction I travel and will ward off evil spirits. I have had these two tattoos since 1993 and they were done for me by the monk Lunag Por Pern from Wat Bang Pra, Nakkhon Prathom. This is possibly the most well known place to get a Yantra tattoo.

First you needed to find a suitable tree, on which you then had to write a magic symbol and occult number, you were then required to cast a spell on the tree and say a prayer. The tree was then cut down and taken to be burnt. The burning of the tree was also carried out after casting another spell. Once the wood had started burning you placed a clay pot on the fire and soot would start to form on the bottom of the pot. This was all done whilst praying. Once the fire had burnt out you scraped the soot that had formed on the pot into a bowl which contained sesame oil. You would mix the two together, whilst chanting a spell, until the two ingredients were well mixed.

When did you start to visit Chan? What effect does it have on your life?
I started to get tattoos done by Khun Chan last year. Having now had these tattoos I have stability at work and safety from any dangers.

Lifestyle of a Yantra tattoo artist

Most people who carry out Yantra tattoos should follow five certain conditions: you cannot kill, steal, cheat, be intoxicated by alcohol or lust over women. However, each of us will have to also follow the conditions which are laid out by our teacher for example; do not go under clotheslines, do not eat any food at a funeral and do not eat foods such as squash, zucchini and pumpkins.

Why do people have Yantra tattoos?

Yantra tattoos are magic and bestow mystical powers, protection or good luck. The tattoo can protect a person

Yoga

Yoga
in Phuket
Phuket is not only an island for parties and beach activities. It has quickly become a destination for spiritual wellness. Thai culture has a long history and tradition of yoga and this can easily be seen in the culture and customs of Thai people. Phukets growth in tourism has also meant a growth of wellness resorts, where yoga is the main subject on the agenda. You have a choice when it comes to how you want to do your class, you can either take a private class or participate in group classes. The beautiful locations of many of Phukets wellness centers make your Yoga experience even more enjoyable. Participating in Yoga classes whilst staying here is an experience you are not likely to forget in a hurry.

Benefits of Yoga
Circulation
Oxygen is the source of life for every cell in the body. It heals our wounds, kills germs and bacteria, and ensures the strength and vitality of all living tissues. Blood is what carries oxygen throughout the body, and physical activities like yoga raise the heart rate and increase the circulation of oxygen-rich blood. What makes yoga particularly beneficial is that it also boosts blood circulation to often-neglected areas of the body like joints, connective tissues, and internal organs. Deep stretches, twists, backbends, and muscular contractions signal the body to send blood to those specific areas.

Detoxification
Toxins are all around us - in the air, in our food, and in the water - but fortunately, our bodies are designed to naturally eliminate these poisons through the skin, the breath, the blood, and the organs of elimination. So how does this relate to yoga? In almost every yoga class, you sweat, you breathe deeply, your heart rate rises (increased circulation), and you massage and stimulate the organs of elimination through twisting and bending postures. For detoxification, a regular yoga practice is extremely effective.

Lifestyle
Yoga Strength and Flexibility
Many people think that in order to change their body they need to use the latest exercise machine or hire a personal trainer.. Yoga postures strengthen and lengthen the bodys connective tissues through physical postures that have been practiced for thousands of years. It doesnt matter if you are flexible or stiff, weak or strong, yoga can transform your body and mind and improve your overall health. that stress creates - so many students see yoga as the perfect cure for a hard day at work.

Self Confidence & Self Esteem

Yoga makes you feel healthy, strong, and limber which will immediately boost your self-image and self-confidence. Learning yoga postures creates an enormous sense of pride that will improve the way you feel about yourself both inside the studio as well as out in your daily life.

Breath Control
The quality of our breath is directly related to our mental state. When we are upset, the breath tends to be fast and shallow. When we are at ease, the breath is usually slow and deep. We dont have to think to breathe, but when we learn to consciously control the breath, it helps us to control the body and mind as well. Often referred to as moving meditation, an advanced yoga practice is one where students are able to maintain deep, consistent breath throughout their entire practice, regardless of the physical posture they are performing. In this manner, yoga teaches us to control our state of mind, regardless of the daily stresses we encounter.

Stress Relief
The stress and pressure of our daily lives can lead to serious illness and disease if left unchecked. A regular yoga practice calms the body and mind, boosts the immune system, and eliminates the toxins

Weight Loss
Many students report that after practicing yoga regularly, they feel less hungry and make better choices when eating. As part of an overall healthy lifestyle, yoga is a great way to cleanse the body, increase metabolism, stimulate waste elimination, and reduce food cravings.

Siriluck Junkaew

is founder and owner of Phukets famous cake & dessert makers named Bake@Holic. Siriluk is not only passionate about cakes and desserts but also about the science of yoga. Siriluk told us I had practiced yoga for more than three years but never consistently. I only started practicing yoga on serious level a few months ago. For me personally the main benefits have been that my body has toned, become a lot firmer and my overall health has improved so much. I seriously believe that I feel stronger, both mentally and physically, now than at any other time in my life. This is due to the fact that yoga is a practice which helps you to control the body and mind. Yoga has made me calmer, especially during stressful times at work. I think yoga really has changed my life for the better!

Sala SuddhavaSa
The Practices

internal arts centre - a heavenly abode on earth.

estled at the end of a quiet soi in Naiharn is the Sala Suddhavasa Internal Arts Centre. The only true internal arts school in phuket.

What are internal arts?

Internal arts are practises both physical and mental that deal directly with internal energy known as Qi (Chi) or prana, these exercises can be both still or moving, passive or dynamic. The most classical and well known internal arts are taiji (taichi), yoga, qigong (chi gung) and meditation. At Sala Suddhavasa, the methods used in these practises are traditional and authentic and the arts of taiji, yoga, qigong and meditation are taught not only in a physical way but work directly with energy and mind leading to profound benefits, unlike many modern schools which focus only on the physical body. Physical: the benefits in the physical body encompass: stretching and opening the tendons and connective tissue, strengthening and stabilising the muscular system, cleansing and revitalising the organs, purifying the blood and skin calming and rejuvenating the nervous system. Energy: there are 3 main aspects of human energy. The physical energy which is increased and stabilized, the life force which is accumulated and purified and the emotional and mental energies which are balanced and calmed, leading to concentration as well as release of negative tendencies and stress.

Taiji quan supreme ultimate fist is considered the pinnacle of all martial arts. An internal system based on principles of softness generating power & stillness overcoming movement. Taiji is enjoyed by people of all ages & all levels of fitness. A complete system in itself, taiji leads to gains in health, self defense & meditative awareness. Being internal and subtle, taiji builds power & clarity in the body, energy & mind. In order to gain the true results of taiji, one needs to train with a teacher who can demonstrate the true internal power of the art & teach a genuine traditional system. Qi gong energy work focuses on building, refining & controlling the internal energies of the mind &body. Qi gong practice will empower one & deepen their level of martial arts, sports, healing or meditation whilst building health & well being. Raja yoga or the royal path is known to be one of the worlds most ancient systems available today. Yoga is the mother of all mind body practises, this age old art born in the mystical land of India, works with asana (postures) pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation. These exercises bring the body to a healthier state, balance out physical limitations, improve blood circulation which results in an overall healthy body and calm mind, presenting itself from the outside perspective as a fresh looking, lean, strong and flexible body. Meditation is the only practice used by all genuine spiritual traditions throughout the ages. There are two methods of meditation samata (calm abiding) & vipassana (clear seeing). At Sala Suddhavasa these practices lead one to peace, spiritual power & wisdom.

What if your life turned out the way you dreamed and planned it?

46

www.phuketindex.com

Lifestyle

Where do I start?
First visualize, and then write down, your purpose and the goals you would like to achieve. Why? Because writing acts as the first step in taking things from the world of imagination to the physical world by defining them in space-time. Writing is a form of creation. It clarifies your mind, and when your mind is crystal clear on what it would love, it finds a way to manifest those goals.

What if I do not know what my purpose in life is?

In your heart you know exactly what youd love to do, but the fears and guilt in your head stop you from acknowledging it. Break it down so you can approach what youd love without the fears that paralyze you vision. You may not know the details consciously, but inside your soul, its all perfectly clear and just waiting for you to call on it. So start with what you do know and build.

Feat ur e

Would you love to travel?

Start with the most obvious questions:

Would you love Would you love to work with to be wealthy? people? How wealthy?
Would you love to make a difference in the world? If yes, in what way?

What inspires you most?

Would you love to write, paint, speak, build, or teach?

Are my goals the same thing as my purpose?

A purpose isnt something you accomplish, its something you live, and theres no end to it. A goal may be within your life; a purpose is through or beyond it. Fulfilling goals along the journey of your purpose will encourage you, and an inspiring purpose will give meaning to your achievements. The greater your purpose, the greater the power you can bring to bear upon your goals. A great purpose keeps your goals in perspective, and they seem much easier to achieve when measured against an immortal challenge. A person with a mission has a message, and when you find that message, your business, your wealth, and your life will boom. When you cant wait to share your message with people, they cant wait to hear you. Youll face

trials and tribulations along the road to your dreams, but what else will you do with your life? Unless you work on whats in your heart, youll break it. Dont let anything on the inside or the outside keep you from your dream, because your dream is your life-your spiritual calling brought into physical reality. The higher the calling, the greater the worldly rewards for bringing it here. That dream is heaven for you, and its here now. Why did you choose your career in real estate?

The Phuket Villa Group was founded by my father and a few of his very close friends over 20 years ago. I actually began work as a computer engineer; however, over time I gradually started to shift myself towards real estate and realised it was something I really had a passion for. I then decided to go to New York and do a masters degree in real estate development, this is where the majority of my knowledge has come from. I have also been lucky enough to have learnt a lot from some the industry leaders here in Phuket.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I would like to see myself still developing good projects but with regards to direction I would really like to keep that a secret for now.

Have you seen any change in the real estate industry since you have been involved in it?
Thats a very wide question. Well with regards to the market, this has changed continuously since our group started. When the group was originally set up, the buyer of land had a lot more power in negotiations. However, now things are a little different. There are now so many more players in the market and more sophisticated investors. Also the land in Phuket has changed so much. As an example, 20 years ago you couldnt drive to Patong, there were no roads. So that shows you how quickly things have changed here.

Do you have any role models?

I think I would have to say my father. He is currently serving as the Provincial Administrative Office Chief Execute and I have to say I respect him a great deal. He has been putting a lot of time and effort into helping with the needs of the people here in Phuket. His latest project was the opening of the spectacular fountain in Saphan Hin Park, which is aimed at bringing more tourists to the Saphan Hin area. He is a very creative person which is where I think I get my creative side from.

How do you see the future of the real estate industry in Phuket?
I believe the real estate industry here will continue to grow. Before the tourism industry hit Phuket it was a land mine. Once the mining industry died the island shifted to a tourism island. As tourism here is still continuing to grow, so will real estate, real estate developers benefit a lot from the tourism industry.

What is your main goal in life?

I want to be able to do what I do best, which is very similar to what I do now.

If you werent doing the job you do now what would you be doing?
I cant really see myself doing anything but real estate, its something which has really got its hold on me and Ive grown to become very passionate about. But to answer the question perhaps I would be a lawyer.

What would your advice be to anyone who wishes to join the real estate industry?
The main thing you need to do is to learn the market because every single real estate development is unique. Sometimes you think you know the industry and you really dont. Also be aware that although there are a lot of positives with working in the industry there can also be some negatives.

What do you get most satisfaction from within your job?

Talking to customers, for me thats the most enjoyable part, especially satisfied customers. Unsatisfied customers also tell you a lot of stories, Im not saying that satisfies me but I learn a lot from their comments.

Why did you choose Phuket for the new branch?

The growth rate of real estate in Phuket is very high, number 2 in Thailand behind Pattaya and it also has a high-end market, with higher-priced and top-level product. People living here on Phuket island, both Thai and foreign, are passionate about many things! One of the things they are growing more and more passionate about is their local football team FC Phuket, nicknamed The South Sea Kirins. Founded in 2009 by local government official Paiboon Upatising, FC Phukets home is the Surakul Stadium on the outskirts of Phuket Town. It was their ambition, although possibly a little bit high, to reach the Thai Premier League within the first 2 years. However, in their first season with only 9 points from 14 games, they were back to down to earth with a bump, finishing ninth in the Thai Second Division. In 2010 FC Phuket turned the table and dominated the South Division of the Regional League and become champions, gaining automatic promotion into the Thai First Division. Now just over halfway through the 2011 season the team, which now includes a number of foreign players, are in a good position in the top half of the table and automatic promotion to the Premier League is still a possibility.

coach so coach soMPong Wattana 43 years old

Why do you decide to take the coaching job here at FC Phuket?
Im originally from the South of Thailand so I really wanted to be a coach in my home region.

When you came to FC Phuket what did you want to improve within the team?
I could see that they need to develop on their personal strength and also needed to learn some new techniques for set plays. The general organisation within the team was quite poor too.

Do you think FC Phuket can still get promotion to the Premier League this season?
That is so hard to guess, but FC Phuket and all the players all have high hopes of being able to play in Thailands top league and so do i. I will try my best to do it and make the players improve so we can go up. If we have an opportunity to play in the Thai Premier league it would make Phuket people very happy and also make southern people happy too. So all I can say is I will do my best.

How do you communicate with the players what with them being from different countries?
Sometimes we use transliterated words and most often football words. Some of our foreign players have lived in Phuket for a few years so they can speak basic Thai also.

Who do you admire most as a football coach and why?

Now i would say its our new goalkeeper, he is so good! He has good sense, is so dedicated and his complete outlook makes him a great keeper.

Can you tell me how you feel before playing in a match?
I have to concentrate and focus on the game ahead. For me this is the most important thing before a match.

What is your most memorable experience as a footballer so far?

The best memory for me was last season when I was playing for Pattaya United we finished in 6th place in the Thai Premier League.

If you werent playing football what would you be doing?

Oh thats easy, if I wasnt playing football I would be a top model, sure! (Proceeds to show us his catwalk strut including pose; personally I think he should stick with football.)

Which team did you support when you were younger & why?
If you ask me about international team then Manchester United, If a Thai team then Burirum PEA. I think they do so well with their planning and are so exciting to watch.

How do you think the quality of football compare with that in France?
Its not the same style of football, but at the end of the day football is football. I think the quality of football here in Thailand is good and is getting better all the time.

If you could play for any team in the world, what team would it be and why?
It would have to be FC Barcelona; they are the best team in the world.

If you could play alongside anybody who would it be & why?

There are so many people I would love to play alongside both Thai and international? But I suppose it would it would have to be Rio Ferdinand. I like his style of play and how he reads the game.

Had to been here before playing for the club, what do you think of the island?
This is the first time i have been to Phuket and i think everything here, from football to the people is perfect. Phuket people are great and because i feel so good outside of playing football, it makes me feel so much better on the pitch.

Who do you admire most as a footballer and why?

In my position it has to be John Terry, he is by far the best in that position. But in general it would have to be Lionel Messi, he is the best player in the world.

Set to open in December, Flying Hanuman is Mons latest creation and Phukets ultimate jungle experience, showing a completely different side to the Pearl of the Andaman. It is a multi-layered attraction, opening the door to the beauty of untouched forest in the hills of Kathu and giving a glimpse into how humans benefit from what nature provides. The area bears rubber trees, a variety of tropical fruit and fresh water. Flying Hanuman is a true top Eco-attraction.

Patak Villa was important in the growth of the Chalong area and its popularity among residents inspired Mon to give it a slogan. His Lovely community @ Chalong Bay provided him with core business skills he still uses today. Its latest phase, the Patak Villa Premium Townhomes are on the verge of completion, with buyers already moving into finished units. The Townhomes set themselves apart from the rest, with parks and common areas that exceed minimum regulations, as well as a contemporary atmosphere that Mon and his team worked hard to create.

Pattanapong Aikwanich

attanapong Aikwanich is Managing Director of the Diamond Cliff Resort & Spa, Baan Sukhothai Company and also the Patong Promenade project. Khun Pattanapong previously held the position of President of PTA, Phuket Tourism Association, and is currently an advisor to them. He recently took time out from his busy working schedule to answer some of our questions.

What is Patong Promenade?

Patong Promenade is Phukets latest entertainment and shopping complex, which our company (Baan Sukhothai) decided to bring to Patong. This complex will replace our previous project the Baan Sukhothai Hotel. We decided to change the hotel to this fantastic complex because it is such a prime location in Patong. The hotel had been there for 30 years. However, I could see there was something better to be doing with the land than keep running a hotel business. The area which surrounded the hotel has, over time, changed into an entertainment area and the hotel was no longer a suitable business to be running where it was. So after talking amongst the committee of the company we decided we should go for it and the idea of Patong Promenade was born.

66

www.phuketindex.com

Living
Entertainment

How did the concept come about?

We want the area to be used for a combination of entertainment, shopping, drinking and dining. We want it to be a one-stop destination. When tourists come and visit Patong, we want them to visit us. They will get almost everything they need there. When they want to eat, they can eat. When they want to dance, they can dance. They can sing, they can drink, and they can shop. They can do everything they would usually do around the whole of Patong under one roof. I think our location is so convenient for them, it will be hard to beat, and thats for sure.

How does Promenade differ from other shopping complexes in Phuket?

The main role of Patong Promenade is to serve as the entertainment hub of Patong, not purely a shopping complex. The shopping is only a small part of what we have to offer. Dont get me wrong, there will be plenty of shopping, approximately one third of the area will be shopping, but we are mainly focused on entertainment.

But getting back to the question, I would say we are different from other places for various reasons. First of all, we are in a prime location on the corner of Bangla Road and Rat-Uthit 200 Pee Road. Secondly, we are a walking street complex, with areas that are full walking streets and an extension of Bangla Road. Parts of these walkways will be covered by a unique canvas marquee allowing visitors to be protected in all weather conditions. The architecture will also be very varied. There will be some buildings with Phukets original Sino-Portuguese architecture, some that feature amazing modern architecture, one which is designed to look like a forest and features tiger sculptures, and our main building that uses a modern Sukhothai design with the use of multi-coloured stain glass windows. Another thing is that we will be able to offer our visitors parking. We will be able to accommodate about 600-700 vehicles per day. This will be available in a dedicated secure underground parking area. Another thing people must realise is this is not a one man show. We have business partners who have put a lot of time and effort into this project too, and they are bringing many different types of entertainment to this complex, international entertainment that cannot be found anywhere else on the island.

good variety of options for visitors, not too much of the same thing as has been done in other locations. By the time we open, we should be at 90% occupancy, which will be great.

What is the future for Khun Pattanapong?

We still have some of the original buildings which are located at the front of the Patong Promenade site. Within the next two or three years, those buildings will be renovated. Once those are complete I am sure that Patong Promenade will be the most beautiful attraction for tourists who come to the island. This area has been designed to suit each and every individual. This is not a place designed for only men. It has been designed for women, children, for families. From when I was President of PTA, it has been our purpose to try to get more families coming here. I think it is better for the island.

Who is Khun Pattanapong away from the business environment?

I like to play golf once in a while. I take care of my collection of Bonsai Trees, of which I have more than 120. Each and every morning I wake at 5.30am to care for them. I love to collect Thai antiques as well. I also like to travel, maybe 2 or 3 times a year I go and visit a different country. Im lucky to have travelled to different countries in Asia, to Europe and Africa. Some of my favourite places are Hawaii, Croatia and also China, places where you can see a different culture to our own. Phuketindex wish Khun Pattanapong, his team and partners of Patong Promenade every success with their new entertainment hub.

When is Promenade due to open?

We are positive that we will be open by our target date in December. We will be running by Christmas for sure.

Do you already have tenants for the outlets?

Yes I would say we are now at around 70% occupancy. We still have some areas we are trying to find the right tenants for. Weve had many bars and restaurants contact us for these spaces but we are still waiting for the right people to approach us. Because of our location we are lucky enough to be able to choose who we have. But we want to have a

A Thousand and One Nights. A bed like this is typically seen in palace interiors and other aristocratic and royal surroundings. Thai furniture gives off a harmonious vibe that makes any room look more dignified. If you add some ornaments and accessories like Buddha statues, incense, bells, flowers, and charms, you will come up with an amazing Thai interior look for your home. Furthermore, in a Thai inspired home, lighting incense and candles in addition to just being ornaments can also bring protection to the family - protection from harm and adversity. This is one feature of Thai interior design that keeps the spirits happy and cared for. For instance, in wealthy homes, they have a room for altars where a Buddha statue is stationed. The altar is of special interest to Thai interior design lovers because it gives the house a sense of completeness not found in other modern homes. Industrious craftsmen in Thailand not only do traditional Thai furniture adored by many artists around the world, but they also produce pieces for export, especially to Japan. Since Japanese furniture tends to cost a lot more because of its superb elegance and style, Thai furniture penetrated the market together with the rest of the Western culture.

Art lovers around the world adore and love Thai interior designs in particular. This is because these designs are clean, clutter-free, and tend to include a lot of mats and pillows, softening the look of wooden furniture and making it more pleasing to the eyes. The unusual textiles and fabrics used in Thai interior designs offer comfort and warmth, features considered lacking in todays world of interior design. This kind of style is well suited for living rooms, bedrooms, the nursery and recreational spaces inside the home. Thai furniture can be massive especially if you take a look at their lacquered beds made of seasoned teak, looking like something you would see from the pages of the book,

Rubberw o o d

Although tourists and the visitors are a large part of the economic means of the survival of our tropical island, it also has another well known resource. Phuket Island has many rubber trees, or rubber plantations.

Rubberwood
Phukets

The first rubber tree was believed to be introduced to Phuket Island, Thailand in 1901; however the exact date isnt certain. The rubber tree can grow up to 30 meters and grows best in a warm tropical environment.

extensively in furniture, flooring, construction and even toys. Given their large size, a single tree can provide a great deal of timber. Rubberwood is strong, flexible, and resistant to fungus, bacteria and mold. Its compatible with most industrial adhesives, easy to work with and has a beautiful grain suitable for quality furniture. The wood is a pale cream to yellowish brown color and is easy to stain to gain deeper colors. The finish adaptability is rated at 94% of that of teak under standard conditions and comparable to beech for workability. While the clearing of rainforests to date to make way for rubber plantations is very regrettable, its great to see that rubber trees are now being used for more than just their sap and firewood - its an incredibly versatile tree and given theres no shortage of supply, theres great economic potential for the countries involved in the rubber industry. So next time youre out shopping and you see rubberwood furniture or products, dont let the name of put you off; its an eco-friendly, sustainable and high quality wood!

The trees are harvested for their latex each year, but by the time they get to around 30 years old, latex yields decrease to the point that its not commercially viable to tap the tree any more. In the past when the rubber tree reached this stage, it would be felled and burned on the spot or chopped up for firewood to make way for a new tree - but the wood is now being used

rESin LADy FigurinE

This lady figurine with a meaningful gesture has been crafted using a relatively lightweight resin mix with a wonderfully authentic bronze and gold finish. This piece will make a stunning focal point in any home.

CErAmiC STOOLS
These colourful contemporary ceramic stools would look wonderful either indoors or outdoors. The paint work is in a Batik style using the original Batik technique.

WHALE BOnE SCuLpTurE

A fossilised whale bone figurative sculpture set on a metal stand. What a centre piece this would make in the home. It would certainly draw a lot of attention and make a great topic of conversation. Hade made by a Thai designer.

DAy BED
Again, for the den perhaps, or if used as a functional but somewhat decadent sofa in the lounge, this piece is perfect to give a good nights sleep to those guests who call in unexpectedly and maybe have a little too much to drink to drive home. Can be split into two separate beds.
