Introduc ing the Database
Introducing the Database
Char act er ist ics of t he 3700 syst em include:
t It is a r elat ional dat abase in which t ables st or e all
infor mat ion.
t The Relat ional Dat abase Management Syst em (RDBMS)
manages t he dat abase and funct ions as t he dat abase ser ver.
t POS Configur at or is t he soft war e layer bet ween you and
RDBMS. It s your int er face t o t he dat abase.
A Da ta b a se Syste m
In a 3700 syst em, RDBMS act s as a mult i-user dat abase ser ver.
This means t hat many wor kst at ions (client s) can access t he
infor mat ion st or ed in t he dat abase.
RDBMS is t he soft war e bet ween t he physical dat abase and you.
Weve made accessing t he dat abase even simpler by adding an
addit ional soft war e layer bet ween you and RDBMS. That layer
is 3700 POS Configur at or POS Configur at or.
An SQ L Da ta b a se
Dat abase infor mat ion is accessed t hr ough SQLpr onounced

Many of t he for ms in POS Configur at or cont ain fields t hat ar e

The Menu Items form allows you to select information from the

retrieves information from the database tables where each
piece of information is stored.

Se q ue nc e a nd Ob je c t Numb e rs
Each r ecor d in a 3700 dat abase t able is ident ified by a unique
sequence number. Sequence number s r efer t o individual r ecor ds
in t he t able and t her efor e may never change. You cannot view
sequence number s in most POS Configur at or for ms, because
t hey ar e set in t he dat abase. Object number s, on t he ot her

Not e
You cannot dir ect ly change an object number t o one
t hat alr eady exist s for anot her r ecor d. Each object
number in t he dat abase must be unique. To change
object number s, assign a new (unique) object
number t o t he it ems you want t o change. Then you

Object numbers in SQL

Sequence numbers usually
do not appear in POS

of the SQL table.
