The word entering descends from the IE root en- which means “in.” Its paronyms include the words episode, esoteric, in, indigent, industry, inner, interim, interior, intestine, intrinsic, introduce and the prefixes in- and im-. The word canoe descends from the Spanish canoa, itself a term adapted by the explorer Columbus from the native Arawakan word canaoua.
