Next week, we will continue to identifying shapes and learn to identify and name geometric solids. In phonics, we will begin learning blends, staring with BR and BL and will continue learning about and reading non-Hiction texts. We will also begin our ABC book for our Expedition.
Scholars in the class of 2028 studied the art of the American artist Jasper Johns. They looked at his piece entitled, Colored Alphabet. They wrote the Hirst letter of their name with their favorite primary color. They turned it into a shape by enclosing it. They then learned how to mix the secondary colors and painted these for their background. They are displayed by class to look like Jasper Johns original piece. See above for an example.

All week, scholars have been creating Hlashcards as part of their homework. Please help your scholar to practice his or her Hlashcards each night.
This week in literacy, the Class of 2026 began our study of non-Hiction texts. Scholars learned about tables of contents. They learned how to use a table of contents to make predictions about a book and ask questions. Scholars also learned about using schema (what we already know) to help us learn more about texts we read. Over the next several weeks, scholars will be delving into non-Hiction texts to learn to read them for enjoyment and information. In Expedition, our study of countries continues. This week, scholars created maps of their countries. On Thursday, scholars interviewed experts from each country. Thanks to all of the Alma community members who served as experts!

Ms. Harris has very generously offered to take a headshot of each scholar at no cost. She will also be taking a photo of each class. Families will receive a proof of the photo and an order form listing prices for prints. Families wishing to order photos will complete the order form and return it along with payment. Photos will be available for the holidays. Scholars will be expected to come to school in uniform for their photos.
Please join scholars, parents, teachers, and other members of the Alma community for a fall feast! It will feature a multicultural potluck dinner, activities, a story time, and an opportunity to give thanks. If you would like to bring food, please complete the sign up form from the Parent Council and return it to school with your scholar on Monday.
In
developing
our
winter
recess
policies,
we
have
reviewed
the
policies
of
other
Massachusetts
school
districts.
The
guidelines
below
have
been
adopted
to
allow
scholars
to
get
out
as
much
as
possible
while
protecting
their
health
and
safety:
If the wind chill is under 10 F or the play surface is too icy, scholars will have indoor recess. If the wind chill is 10 F - 15 F, outdoor recess will be shortened. Please make sure that your scholar comes to school with proper outdoor attire every day. If you have speciHic medical concerns about your scholar, please speak with our school nurse.
Do you have coats, other winter clothes, books, or toys that are in good condition? Please consider donating them to Alma del Mar! You may drop off donations at Alma anytime until December 2. Donations will be distributed to families in need of these items. Thanks for your generosity!
Thanks to the leadership of Michelle Russell and the volunteer efforts of many other parents, the Scholastic Book Fair was a great success. As a result of your purchases, Alma classrooms will receive more than $650 worth of free books! There will be Scholastic Book Fairs at Parent Conferences each quarter.
