AEI-505.22
AEI-505.22 2
Recap

In the last class we have studied about :

 Op-amp definition

 Applications

 Summing amplifier

AEI-505.22 3
Difference amplifier

Definition

Op-amp may be used to design a circuit whose

output is difference of input signals. such a

circuit is called difference amplifier or subtractor

Difference amplifier

 The figure shows a basic differential amplifier

used as a subtractor

 The values of all resistors are equal

 Thus gain of the amplifier is 1

AEI-505.22 6
Difference amplifier

 The gain of the op amp in this mode is

V0 RF
AD  
Va  Vb R1

R
V0    Va  Vb 
R

V0  Vb  Va

AEI-505.22 7
Difference amplifier

 Thus the output voltage is equal to the voltage Vb

applied to the non inverting terminal minus the

voltage Va applied to the inverting terminal

 Hence the circuit is called the subtractor

AEI-505.22 8
Summary

In this class we have studied about :

 Subtractor (Difference amplifier)
