Vulvodynia

A chronic condition involving burning vulvar pain. Other sensations may include stinging, irritation, and
rawness in certain spots or of the entire vestibule. Low dose antidepressants are often prescribed as
treatment. Unknown etiology.

Vestibulitis
Another condition with an unknown etiology. Involves acute and chronic inflammation of the vestibular
glands lying just inside the introitus, near the hymenal ring. Glands between the 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock
positions are most often affected. Suspect when intercourse or tampon insertion becomes newly
painful. Areas affected may appear as small reddended patches which can be touched with a moist
cotton tipped swab to recreate the pain (Q-tip test). Also treated with low dose tricyclic
antidepressants, or even surgical removal of the vestibular glands.
